The Church of Virgen Milagrosa, known locally as Iglesia de la Milagrosa, stands as a modern architectural gem nestled in the Cruz Alta neighborhood of Ourense, Spain. This 20th-century Catholic church is a beacon of faith and community, offering a unique blend of historical significance and contemporary design.
The roots of the Church of Virgen Milagrosa trace back to the Congregation of the Mission, founded by Saint Vincent de Paul in France in 1625. This congregation made its way to Spain in 1704, initially establishing a presence in Barcelona. By 1866, the Vincentian priests were conducting missions in Ourense, most notably in Ginzo de Limia. Their influence grew, and by 1869, they had established a permanent base at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Miracles, becoming the sole community of Vincentian Brothers in Galicia.
Fast forward to the 20th century, the need for a dedicated parish became evident. In 1967, Father Domingo García petitioned the bishop of Ourense for the creation of a new parish. This request was granted, and by 1971, the Church of Virgen Milagrosa was officially established. The construction of the church began on February 1, 1971, on a vineyard known as Fonte do Monte, owned by the Vincentian Brothers. This site was valued at nearly 12 million pesetas at the time.
The church was completed on March 24, 1973, and inaugurated on May 10 of the same year. The bishop of Ourense, Ángel Temiño Sáiz, blessed the church during its inauguration and donated a marble statue of the Virgen Milagrosa, crafted by sculptor Nicanor Carballo. The church quickly became a focal point for the community, with parishioners contributing to its furnishings, including an organ and various religious artifacts.
The Church of Virgen Milagrosa is a testament to modern ecclesiastical architecture. Visitors approach the church via a grand staircase, leading to a simple yet striking facade. The exterior is characterized by a combination of stepped stone walls and smooth surfaces, accented by understated buttresses. The most eye-catching feature is the colorful, conical glass dome that crowns the building, topped with a cross.
Inside, the church spans 738 square meters and can accommodate up to 400 people. It features a single hexagonal nave, designed with the minimalist aesthetic inspired by the Second Vatican Council. The altar, made of stone, is trapezoidal and adorned with a symbolic M crossed by a line, representing the Miraculous Medal. Behind the altar, a crucifix takes center stage, flanked by statues of Saint Vincent de Paul and the Virgen Milagrosa.
The church's interior is bathed in natural light, thanks to large square stained-glass windows that line the walls. These windows, divided by beams, create a serene and luminous atmosphere. The simplicity of the design is further emphasized by the limited decoration, with only a few statues and paintings adorning the space.
Adjacent to the church, visitors will find the residence of the Vincentian Brothers, adding to the spiritual and communal ambiance of the area. A short distance from the church stands a remarkable stone cross, also crafted by Nicanor Carballo, which was inaugurated in 2001. This cross features intricate carvings of traditional religious scenes, including the crucifixion and the Pietà, as well as depictions of the Virgen Milagrosa and Saint Vincent de Paul.
The Church of Virgen Milagrosa is more than just a place of worship; it is a hub for community gatherings and spiritual reflection. The church's crypt houses meeting rooms and catechesis halls, fostering a sense of fellowship among its members. The wooden balustrade and trapezoidal gallery add to the church's architectural charm, while the hexagonal skylight under the dome provides a unique focal point.
For those visiting Ourense, the Church of Virgen Milagrosa offers a peaceful retreat and a chance to appreciate modern religious architecture. Its blend of history, community, and design make it a must-see destination for anyone exploring the cultural and spiritual landscape of this vibrant Spanish city.
