Christ Church, Paignton

Christ Church, Paignton Paignton

Christ Church, Paignton

Nestled in the charming seaside town of Paignton, Devon, Christ Church stands as a beacon of architectural beauty and historical significance. This Church of England parish church, with its roots deeply embedded in the evangelical tradition, invites visitors to explore its storied past and appreciate its architectural splendor. Designed by the talented duo Walter G. Couldrey and Edward Gabriel, Christ Church has been a cherished landmark since its completion in 1888.

The Birth of Christ Church

The late 19th century was a period of rapid growth for Paignton, and the need for a new church became evident. Efforts to establish a separate ecclesiastical district began as early as 1863, but it wasn't until a pivotal meeting in April 1886 that plans truly took shape. Mrs. Disney Robinson of Torquay played a crucial role, pledging £1,500 for the church’s endowment. With the Ecclesiastical Commissioners matching her sum and providing land, the foundation for Christ Church was set.

The church's construction was a community effort, with local builders and craftsmen contributing to its creation. The foundation stone was laid by the Bishop of Exeter, Right Rev. Edward Bickersteth, in April 1887, and the church was consecrated just over a year later, in June 1888. The original iron church, erected temporarily, was repurposed as a Sunday school, highlighting the community's dedication to education and worship.

Architectural Marvel

Christ Church is a stunning example of Early English architectural style, crafted from local red sandstone with freestone dressings. Its design accommodates 600 worshippers, featuring a nave with a clerestory, chancel, narrow north and south aisles, and north and south transepts. The church's interior is adorned with original fittings, including a pulpit made from Caen stone and Devonshire marble pillars, and a brass eagle lectern perched on Dartmoor granite.

Although a tower and spire were initially planned, financial constraints prevented their construction. Despite this, the church's architecture remains impressive, drawing visitors who appreciate its historical and aesthetic value.

A Living History

Christ Church has witnessed many changes over the years. In 2002, it united with St Paul's to form a joint benefice, furthering its mission within the community. The church's stance on certain ecclesiastical matters has evolved, reflecting broader changes within the Church of England. Notably, a resolution to reject the leadership and ordination of women was overturned in 2022, marking a significant shift in its governance.
