The Historical Tapestry of Visitation Chapel

The origins of the Visitation Chapel trace back to the late 13th century, coinciding with the construction of a road to the newly established Falkenstein Castle. Although the exact date of the chapel's founding remains a mystery, it was first mentioned in a report to the Ordinariat in 1658, where it was already described as ancient. Originally known as Unsere Liebe Frau im Burgweg, the chapel became a place of pilgrimage for expectant mothers, who prayed before the revered image of the Virgin Mary for safe childbirth. This tradition, documented as early as 1738, bestowed upon the chapel the affectionate name Maria Hilf among locals.

Architectural Elegance and Renovations

The Visitation Chapel is a modest yet charming structure, characterized by its rectangular nave and slightly recessed, three-sided choir. The building showcases two window axes in the nave and an additional one in the choir, allowing natural light to illuminate the interior. An octagonal roof turret houses a small bell, originally cast in 1644 and recast after World War II due to damage. Inside, the choir is separated from the nave by a robust arch, and a western gallery adds to the chapel's architectural interest. The flat ceiling with a hollow mold and early Baroque stucco work by Jakob Miller from Wessobrunn adds a touch of artistic flair. The chapel underwent its last major renovation in 1973, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

This image, adorned with taffeta, trimmings, and ribbons in a Baroque style, was meticulously restored in 1980, preserving its historical and artistic value.
