Sint-Janskerk

Sint-Janskerk Poperinge

Sint-Janskerk

In the heart of the charming town of Poperinge in West Flanders, Belgium, stands the magnificent Sint-Janskerk, a Roman Catholic parish church that has been a beacon of faith and architectural splendor for centuries. This protected cultural monument, with its rich history and stunning design, is a must-visit for anyone exploring the region.

The Historical Tapestry of Sint-Janskerk

The origins of Sint-Janskerk date back to 1290, when the Abbot of Saint-Bertin Abbey in Saint-Omer and the Bishop of Terwaan granted permission for the construction of two new churches in Poperinge, one of which was Sint-Janskerk. This decision was made in response to the town’s burgeoning economic prosperity.

The church’s crossing tower, a prominent feature, was constructed around 1300. The choir and nave followed, built towards the end of the 13th century and throughout the 14th century. Originally a three-aisled basilica, the church saw the addition of two transept arms in the mid-14th century and an enlarged choir at the beginning of the 15th century. A significant event in 1479, known as the Miracle of Our Lady of St. John, attracted numerous pilgrims and led to the annual Procession of the Virgin Mary. Around 1500, the church was further expanded, and side choirs were added, complete with wooden barrel vaults.

Despite the iconoclastic fury of the late 16th century, which left many religious buildings in ruins, Sint-Janskerk sustained minimal damage. In the early 17th century, the original spire of the crossing tower was replaced with an octagonal dome topped by a lantern. The 19th century saw various restorations and changes, including the construction of a new sacristy in 1877. The 1930s brought the addition of a neo-Gothic baptistery, while post-World War I repairs uncovered late Gothic wall paintings beneath the 19th-century plaster.

Architectural Marvels and Treasures

Sint-Janskerk is a three-aisled basilica predominantly built from yellow brick. The main choir, with its five-sided termination, dates from the early 15th century, while the side choirs, with their flat terminations, were added around 1500. The church’s inventory is a treasure trove of art and history, featuring a painting of the Judgment of Solomon from 1630, along with other 17th-century masterpieces depicting the Baptism of Jesus, the Beheading of John the Baptist, and the Feeding of the Five Thousand. A depiction of the Assumption of Mary from 1733 also graces the church.

One of the church’s most intriguing artifacts is an 18th-century tomb monument containing a painted wooden statue of Saint Barbara. The crossing pillars are adorned with statues of saints, possibly from the same period, including a poignant representation of the Mater Dolorosa. The church’s furniture primarily dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, with the main altar, crafted in a neo-Gothic style, dating to around 1900. The northern side choir houses a side altar from 1670, featuring the miraculous statue believed to date from the 15th century. The southern side altar, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, was created in 1768, while the northern transept contains a 1670 altar dedicated to the Holy Family. The southern transept’s altar, also from 1670, is dedicated to Saint Sebastian.

The choir stalls, dating from 1776, are a fine example of Rococo craftsmanship. The paneling, from the third quarter of the 18th century, is designed in a classical style. The communion bench, pulpit, and four confessionals, all from 1780, are also in the Rococo style. In 1765, a rood screen and an organ, built by J.J. vander Haegen, were added. Although the organ was damaged during the French Revolutionary Wars, it was later repaired. A new organ, built by Jules Anneessens in 1921, was installed in the old casing and has since undergone several renovations, now boasting 19 stops on two manuals and a pedal.
