Villa Galvani

Villa Galvani Pordenone

Villa Galvani

Villa Galvani, nestled in the charming town of Pordenone in Italy, is a splendid example of a 19th-century Venetian villa that beautifully combines historical significance with modern cultural vibrancy. This elegant structure, surrounded by lush greenery and a picturesque park, offers visitors a delightful journey through time and art.

The History of Villa Galvani

Villa Galvani was commissioned in the early 19th century by the affluent Galvani family, who were prominent entrepreneurs from Emilia. The family established several successful businesses in Pordenone, including a paper mill, a silk spinning mill, and a ceramics factory, significantly contributing to the local economy and society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The villa itself was constructed in multiple phases. Initially, the central square-plan building with two floors and an attic was completed between 1831 and 1851, as recorded in the Lombard-Venetian cadastre. Later, the structure evolved into its current rectangular shape with two additional side wings, as documented in the Austro-Italian cadastre from 1851 to 1943. The villa also included two small outbuildings used as storage or depots.

Unfortunately, the villa was abandoned in the early 20th century and gradually fell into disrepair. It remained in the Galvani family's possession until 1970, when it was ceded to the Municipality of Pordenone as part of an urban development agreement. Recognizing its historical value, the villa and its park were placed under cultural protection in 1980.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Villa Galvani underwent extensive restoration and was repurposed to host temporary exhibitions and cultural events starting in 1990. In 2010, the villa's surroundings were further enhanced with the inauguration of the MIRA - Museo Itinerante della Rosa Antica, featuring 185 varieties of roses from 40 species planted along a scenic walkway around the pond.

The Architectural Charm of Villa Galvani

Villa Galvani showcases the quintessential characteristics of a Venetian villa with its three-story structure. The surrounding park, spanning 2.87 hectares, is designed in a late-Romantic eclectic style, reminiscent of the informal English gardens popular in the 18th century. Visitors can stroll through the park's winding paths lined with holm oaks, Atlas cedars, magnolias, and ancient horse chestnut trees, all leading to a serene pond.

The villa's architectural elegance is complemented by its modern additions. In 2010, two contemporary buildings were constructed adjacent to the villa, covering a total area of 2,110 square meters, including 1,158 square meters of exhibition space. These new structures, collectively known as ParCO (Pordenone Arte Contemporanea), initially housed a gallery dedicated to the works of painter Armando Pizzinato until 2015. The collection was then moved to a new location, ParCO2, in the former schools on Via Bertossi.

PAFF! Palazzo Arti Fumetto Friuli

One of the most exciting developments at Villa Galvani is the PAFF! (Palazzo Arti Fumetto Friuli), also known as the Palazzo del Fumetto. This innovative project was conceived by the renowned comic artist from Pordenone, Giulio De Vita, and the Vastagamma APS Association. Initially proposed in 2014 and officially launched in 2018, PAFF! aims to institutionalize and celebrate the rich comic art heritage of Pordenone and Friuli.

PAFF! is more than just a museum; it is a dynamic cultural hub that uses comic art as a multidisciplinary gateway to reimagine the cultural landscape. The facility serves as an international center for comic arts, offering educational programs, exhibitions, and events that attract diverse audiences. It also plays a vital role in urban regeneration, tourism, and local community engagement.

The International Museum of Comic Art, as PAFF! is now known, was inaugurated on September 16, 2018. Under the directorship of Giulio De Vita until September 2023, the museum has become a beacon of creativity and innovation, drawing comic art enthusiasts from around the world.
