The Transformation by the Dukes of Coburg

The 19th century brought significant changes to Schloss Rosenau under the ownership of Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The duke commissioned the renowned architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel to transform the medieval fortress into a neo-Gothic masterpiece. This renovation, which took place from 1806 to 1817, was one of the earliest examples in Germany of a romanticized revival of medieval architecture.
