The History of Lokschuppen Rosenheim

Originally constructed in 1858, the Lokschuppen was part of the Bavarian State Railway's operations workshop, coinciding with the opening of the Maximiliansbahn from Munich to Kufstein. The core of this facility was a robust 19-bay semicircular locomotive shed complete with a turntable and head buildings at both ends. This workshop was strategically placed west of the tracks, adjacent to the reception building, and began operations on November 13, 1858.

However, the rapid growth in rail traffic soon rendered the existing station facilities inadequate. By 1872, plans were in motion to relocate the station to its present site. Following the opening of the new Rosenheim station in 1876, the old facilities were decommissioned and sold to the city of Rosenheim two years later.

Transformation and New Uses

In the following years, the locomotive shed found new life as a municipal warehouse, while the nearby reception building was repurposed as the town hall. In 1884, a single-story connecting building was added between the head buildings. A fire in 1898 partially damaged the warehouse, leading to its reconstruction and expansion. Another fire in 1921 damaged the Lokschuppen, and during its restoration in the following year, the building received its current shed roof.

By 1928, a three-story warehouse replaced the connecting building between the head structures. In 1931, the Lokschuppen itself was repurposed to house the city archive and library, while a portion was converted into a gymnasium the following year. The head buildings became home to local social services and welfare organizations. After 1952, some city offices also moved into the head buildings.

Preservation and Renovation

In 1983, the former reception building and the semicircular structure of the old operations workshop, including the head buildings, were added to Rosenheim's monument list. The demolition of the warehouse between the head buildings allowed the semicircular space in front of the shed to be used as a parking lot. In 1986, an architectural competition was held for the renovation and conversion of the Lokschuppen into an event center. The winning design by Professor Josef Karg from Munich led to the Lokschuppen's transformation, and in 1988, it was awarded the BDA Prize Bavaria by the Association of German Architects for its effective combination of historical architecture with contemporary additions.

The Exhibition Center Lokschuppen Rosenheim

The Lokschuppen Rosenheim officially opened as an exhibition center in 1988 with the state exhibition The Bajuwaren. A year later, the Veranstaltungs- & Kongress GmbH Rosenheim (VKR) took over the operation and marketing of the exhibition center. The Lokschuppen boasts a total area of 1,521 square meters, including a gross exhibition area of 1,316 square meters and a foyer. The forecourt, with a gross area of 2,600 square meters, is available for open-air events. The Lokschuppen also includes the café and restaurant LOKERIA, providing a delightful spot for refreshments.

Situated on the southern edge of the city center, opposite the town hall, the Lokschuppen is a prime location for cultural, historical, ethnological, and natural history exhibitions.
