In 1630, the pestilence struck the town for the tenth time, prompting the local podestà, Appiani, and other city officials to lead a procession to a miraculous shrine known as Alla Crosetta. It was during this spiritual journey that a vow was made to construct a church dedicated to the Madonna, Saint Roch, Saint Sebastian, and Saint Charles, in hopes of warding off the deadly disease.

Construction of the church began in 1631, incorporating the existing shrine into its northern wall, now serving as the altarpiece of the Madonna Chapel. By 1651, the church was consecrated, and its accompanying convent began housing Franciscan friars from Arco in 1638. Over the centuries, Saint Roch Church has undergone several renovations, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, giving it the appearance we see today.

Exploring the Exterior

The approach to Saint Roch Church is marked by two staircases leading to an elevated churchyard. The façade, designed by architect Tiella in the 1950s, is simple yet elegant, featuring a gabled roof and a prominent terracotta bas-relief depicting the meeting of Saint Francis and Saint Roch above the main portal. Flanking the large semicircular window are two inscriptions from the Canticle of the Creatures by Saint Francis, adding a poetic touch to the church’s exterior.

On the retaining wall of the churchyard, a stone plaque commemorates the alleged murder of Bishop Adelpreto II in 1177, adding a layer of historical intrigue to this sacred site.

The Interior's Artistic Treasures

In the left chapel, an exquisite Renaissance-style fresco attributed to Angelo Falconetto (circa 1570) depicts a youthful Madonna with Child, housed within a baroque wooden altar. This chapel also contains the ancient tabernacle, a focal point for the town’s prayers during times of need.

Adorning the choir are several 18th-century canvases, while five paintings by Carlo Gaudenzio Mignocchi further enrich the church’s artistic offerings.

The Chapel of Saint Anthony

Adjacent to Saint Roch Church, the Chapel of Saint Anthony stands as a reminder of the town’s evolving religious landscape. Originally built between 1715 and 1716 and dedicated to Bishop Adelpreto, the chapel was rededicated to Saint Anthony of Padua following a 1931 restoration. This change was partly due to the cessation of the cult of Adelpreto, formally recognized in Trento in 1914.
