Construction commenced in 1847, but the project faced numerous delays and modifications over the years. Despite these challenges, the church was blessed and opened to the public in 1908, although it wasn't fully completed at that time.

It wasn't until after World War II that the external staircase and the travertine façade were finalized. The cathedral was solemnly consecrated on February 11, 1973. In 1986, it was elevated to the status of a cathedral for the Diocese of San Benedetto del Tronto-Ripatransone-Montalto. It gained further recognition when Pope John Paul II elevated it to the dignity of a minor basilica on July 5, 2001.
