The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad is a testament to the rich religious and cultural heritage of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Constructed between 1609 and 1613, this sanctuary was the brainchild of Alonso de Vandelvira, a master architect of the Casa de Medina-Sidonia. The sanctuary was commissioned by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán el Bueno y Zúñiga, the 7th Duke of Medina-Sidonia, and his wife Ana de Silva y Mendoza. Their mortal remains now rest within the basilica, adding a personal touch to this historical monument.
The basilica's architecture is a splendid example of the Mannerist style, characterized by its intricate designs and elaborate details. The primary materials used in its construction are brick and masonry, with stone accents adorning the façades, cornices, and window frames. The main portal, known as the Portada de los pies, is adorned with niches housing decapitated and handless statues of saints such as San Ildefonso, Santo Domingo, San Juan Bautista, and San Juan Evangelista. The second tier of the portal features a relief of Santa Ana and the Virgin, crafted by Andrés de Castillejo.
The lateral portal on the Gospel side is more understated yet equally captivating. It consists of a lintelled opening, flanked by a wide entablature and crowned by a split curved pediment. A tall, shallow niche rises between pinnacles and is capped with a straight pediment, adding a touch of elegance to the structure.
The basilica's tower is a striking feature, constructed from stone and comprising two distinct sections. The lower section is square with an opening on each side, while the upper section is octagonal and nearly solid, topped with a small dome. The altar is adorned with paintings by Francisco Juanete, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin and various reliquaries.
The basilica also houses an impressive collection of relics, including the Reliquaries of Saint Ursula's entourage and the Eleven Thousand Virgins. These bust-shaped sculptures, created in Flanders between 1520 and 1530, were gifted by Emperor Charles V. Among the other treasures are silver artifacts such as the processional canopy used on August 15th, the altar, the frontal, the tabernacle, and six silver candelabras adorning the main altar.
The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad is not just a historical monument but a vibrant center of Catholic devotion. It is home to several brotherhoods, including the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, the Brotherhood of Humility and Patience, and the Brotherhood of the Nazarene of Sanlúcar. The basilica is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Caridad Coronada, a revered image of the Virgin Mary that has been the focal point of numerous miracles. In 1618, she was declared the patroness of Sanlúcar de Barrameda and all the states of the House of Medina Sidonia. In 1965, she was canonically crowned by the Cardinal Archbishop of Seville, Bueno Monreal, by concession of Pope Paul VI and was named the perpetual mayor of the city. In 1997, Pope John Paul II elevated the sanctuary to the dignity of a minor basilica, and in 2002, he proclaimed the Virgin as the canonical patroness of the city.
