The History of the Monastère des Récollets

Louis II de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon, the bishop of Sarlat, played a crucial role in its founding. His vision was to rejuvenate the spiritual life of the diocese and to foster peace and unity among the faithful. The Récollets, a reform branch of the Franciscans, were invited to establish their convent in Sarlat, despite initial resistance from the established Franciscans in the region.

The construction of the monastery began with the acquisition of several properties, including the house of Tustal. By 1618, the construction of the church was underway, and the main structure was completed in 1626. However, the interior was not fully finished until 1651, with the installation of a chestnut wood ceiling.

Architectural Features

By 1914, the chapel was no longer in religious use, having served various secular purposes, including as a gymnasium and warehouse.
