The origins of Santa Maria a Greve date back to the year 978. The church was originally donated to the Badia of Florence by Countess Willa of Tuscany. For the following two to three centuries, it remained under the jurisdiction of the Badia Fiorentina. It wasn't until 1246, or according to some scholars 1350 or even the late 14th century, that it was transferred to the Church of San Romolo in Florence. From the late 18th century until 1939, it was under the care of Orsanmichele. The title of prepositura, or provostship, was granted to the church in 1949, marking a significant milestone in its ecclesiastical journey.

The church has undergone numerous restorations and expansions over the centuries, with a major renovation taking place in 1894-1895. During this renovation, a 14th-century fresco was uncovered beneath a layer of 17th-century plaster, revealing a glimpse into the church's ancient artistic heritage.

Architectural Evolution

The current appearance of Santa Maria a Greve is largely the result of a significant restructuring that occurred between 1934 and 1937. This renovation not only altered the church's orientation but also removed the 18th-century design elements. The façade was relocated to the presbytery side and reconstructed in a rationalist style, designed by engineer Arduino Matassini. The façade features a gabled roof and is preceded by a tall travertine portico with three round arches resting on quadrangular pillars.

To the right of the church stands a striking bell tower made of reinforced concrete and brick, topped with a triangular spire and an iron cross. This bell tower houses a set of five bells in the key of F3, cast by the Capanni Foundry in Castelnovo ne' Monti (RE) in 1964.

Interior Design and Artistic Treasures

The interior of Santa Maria a Greve is characterized by a sober modern style with some neo-Gothic traces. It consists of a single nave covered with exposed wooden trusses and ends with a deep semicircular apse illuminated by single-lancet windows with stained glass. The apse is entirely occupied by the presbytery, which is raised a few steps above the rest of the church. The central altar, the baptismal font and tabernacle on the right, the ambo on the left, and the wooden seat in a recessed position all find their place in this sacred space.

Although some of the church's artistic heritage has been dispersed, several valuable pieces remain. On the left wall, visitors can admire a fine terracotta tabernacle depicting the Madonna and Child, attributed to the workshop of Giovanni della Robbia. On the right wall hangs a painting by Pietro Benvenuti, depicting Christ in the desert being ministered to by angels, dating back to 1828.

In the votive chapel, located to the right of the main entrance, there is a stucco relief of the Madonna and Child, likely of Ghibertian origin. This relief was blackened in the 19th century due to the devotion to the Madonna del Carmelo. The statue was donated to the church by the Vitolini family in the 17th century and was traditionally unveiled during times of great calamity.

Additional artistic elements include a Gothic architrave divided into five panels depicting Hercules, Deianira, and monstrous animals, now preserved in the corridor leading to the rectory, and a fresco of the Madonna and Child with saints, albeit in a poor state of preservation but still legible.
