Burg Schaubeck

Burg Schaubeck Steinheim an der Murr

Burg Schaubeck

Nestled between the charming towns of Steinheim an der Murr and Kleinbottwar in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Burg Schaubeck stands as a testament to centuries of history, architectural evolution, and viticultural excellence. This enchanting castle, which began its journey in the 13th century, offers a unique blend of medieval mystique and modern-day elegance, captivating visitors with its storied past and picturesque surroundings.

The Historical Tapestry of Burg Schaubeck

The origins of Burg Schaubeck date back to 1272, when it was constructed by the ministerials Bertold and Konrad von Schaubeck. These Baden vassals and marshals of Besigheim chose the site for its strategic location atop the remnants of a Roman villa, crafting a fortress that would endure the test of time. Although only remnants of the original tower and foundations remain, the castle's history is rich with tales of ownership changes and architectural transformations.

In 1392, the castle and the adjacent village of Kleinbottwar were sold to Hans Urbach. The Truchsessen of Stetten briefly held possession in 1435 before Georg von Nippenburg took over. It was under the stewardship of Nippenburg's son-in-law, Dietrich von Plieningen, that Burg Schaubeck began its transformation into a more residential and representative estate, a process that spanned until 1642. Despite these changes, the castle retained its defensive character, evident in the absence of windows on the lower floors.

An Architectural Gem

Burg Schaubeck's architecture is a delightful amalgamation of styles, reflecting its long history. The striking north and west facades, adorned with painted cornerstones in shades of red and violet, were added between 1749 and 1765. These features, along with elements of Renaissance and Baroque design, contribute to the castle's unique aesthetic appeal.

One of the most captivating aspects of the castle is its inner courtyard, encircled by charming half-timbered facades. This area, created during the renovations, offers a glimpse into the past, where the balance between fortification and comfort was delicately maintained. The castle's core and its distinctive stair tower have withstood the centuries, preserving the essence of its medieval origins.

The Legacy of the Adelmann Family

The male line of the Plieningen family ended in 1645, and through marriage, the castle eventually came into the possession of the Gaisberg family. It later passed to the Kniestedt family, and upon the extinction of the Kniestedt-Schaubeck line in 1853, it was inherited by Felix Freiherr von Brusselle. The castle's journey continued when it was acquired by the Adelmann family in 1914, through Sophie von Brusselle's marriage to Heinrich Adelmann von Adelmannsfelden.

Raban Adelmann undertook significant renovations beginning in 1935, transforming Burg Schaubeck into a comfortable residence that remains in the Adelmann family to this day. The castle is well-preserved and serves as both a family home and the seat of the Graf Adelmann winery, which has been operating since 1914.

A Vineyard with Deep Roots

The tradition of winemaking in Kleinbottwar can be traced back to 950, with documented evidence of viticulture at Burg Schaubeck dating to 1297. The Graf Adelmann winery continues this legacy, producing wines that reflect the rich terroir and history of the region. Visitors to the castle have the opportunity to purchase these exquisite wines, which embody the spirit and tradition of this historic estate.

Visiting Burg Schaubeck

While Burg Schaubeck is a private residence, the wine sales area is open to the public, offering a chance to experience the castle's charm and taste its renowned wines. The park surrounding the castle is accessible during special events, such as the biennial Wine and Culture Days, where guests can immerse themselves in the beauty and history of the estate.

For those seeking a deeper connection with the past, a visit to Burg Schaubeck is a journey through time, where the stories of knights, nobility, and vintners come to life. The castle's serene setting and architectural splendor provide a perfect backdrop for exploration and reflection, making it a must-visit destination in the heart of Baden-Württemberg.

In conclusion, Burg Schaubeck is not just a historical monument; it is a living testament to the enduring legacy of those who have called it home. From its medieval origins to its present-day role as a center of viticulture, the castle invites visitors to discover the rich tapestry of history woven into its very walls. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a wine lover, or simply a curious traveler, Burg Schaubeck offers an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of Germany's cultural heritage.
