Under the directorship of Pontus Hultén, Moderna Museet flourished as a center for artistic innovation in the 1960s. The museum hosted groundbreaking exhibitions featuring renowned artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Fernand Léger, Joan Miró, John Cage, and David Tudor. In 1965, the museum's collection expanded significantly, thanks to a government grant of 5 million kronor, allowing it to acquire works by major 20th-century artists.

The museum continued to evolve, and in 1971, it inaugurated the Fotografiska Museet, a photography department that enriched its offerings with acquisitions of significant photographic collections. Throughout the 1970s, Moderna Museet showcased exhibitions by influential artists, including Joseph Beuys and Salvador Dalí, further cementing its reputation as a leading institution in the art world.

Architectural Transformation

The 1990s marked a period of architectural transformation for Moderna Museet. In 1990, an international architectural competition was announced to design a new building for the museum. The winning project, Telémaco, was conceived by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. This modern architectural marvel provided expansive spaces for exhibitions and individual artist showcases, enhancing the museum's ability to present its diverse collection.

In 1998, the new building was officially inaugurated by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. The state-of-the-art facility included a cinema, conference hall, and one of Northern Europe's most important art libraries. Expanding Horizons

In 2009, Moderna Museet expanded its reach with the opening of a branch in Malmö, located in a repurposed early 20th-century power station. This new venue, designed by architects Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård, brought the museum's dynamic programming to southern Sweden, further extending its influence and accessibility.
