This early church was part of the parish of Schmalkalden, under the jurisdiction of the Mellrichstadt deanery and the Diocese of Würzburg. The construction of the current St. Marien Church began in 1487, right in the heart of Suhl’s bustling town center. By 1491, the construction was complete, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the town's religious and cultural life.

The church's journey through history has been marked by resilience and renewal. In 1544, the Henneberg rulers introduced the Reformation, transforming St. Marien into a Protestant church. However, the church faced numerous challenges, including devastating fires. The first major fire in April 1590 left the church in ruins. It was rebuilt, only to be destroyed again in 1634 during the Thirty Years' War. The resilient community rebuilt the church between 1647 and 1650, and it was consecrated on October 8, 1654. Yet another city fire in 1753 necessitated another reconstruction, which began in 1757 under the guidance of master mason Johann Philip Kober, based on plans by building writer Ludwig August Hoffmann. The church was consecrated once more on November 1, 1761, with the tower completed in 1769 and the bells installed in 1770.

Architectural Splendor

St. Marien Church is a striking example of late Baroque architecture. The church is designed as a hall church with a steep gable roof, featuring two levels of flat-arched windows that divide the yellow-plastered facade. This facade also incorporates two stone reliefs and three inscriptions from the previous buildings, blending the old with the new.

The church tower, with its square base and distinctive Welsche Haube (a type of Baroque dome), is topped with a lantern, adding to its grandeur. Flanking the tower are round staircases with spiral staircases, enhancing the church's symmetrical beauty. The west side of the church is particularly impressive, with its grand entrance portal, wide pilasters, and a radiant pelican motif in the gable triangle, symbolizing Christ's sacrifice. One of the highlights of St. Marien Church is its magnificent organ, built by Johann Michael Wagner from Schmiedefeld between 1757 and 1762. This organ, with its approximately 3,000 pipes, two manuals, pedal, and 29 stops on slider chests with mechanical action, is a marvel of craftsmanship and musicality. It underwent restoration in 1971/72, ensuring that it continues to fill the church with its majestic sound.
