Its survival through this period spared it from the widespread destruction that befell many other castles.
In the 19th century, the castle underwent significant restoration. After passing through the hands of the Compton family, it was sold to Tamworth Corporation in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee.
