In 1809, during the era of the Duchy of Warsaw, Stanisław Staszic initiated a new project, laying the foundation stone for a monument and starting a fundraising campaign. Unfortunately, the return of Toruń to Prussian control in 1815 halted these efforts, and the collected funds were redirected to a monument in Warsaw.

In 1839, a German society dedicated to building a monument for the famed astronomer, known as Copernicus Denkmalverein, was established. Initially planning to unveil the monument in 1843, the 300th anniversary of Copernicus's death, the society faced numerous challenges. Renowned sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow was approached but declined the project. Subsequently, Christian Friedrich Tieck was recommended and, together with architect Johann Heinrich Strack, designed the monument. Despite delays and financial hurdles, the bronze statue was finally completed and transported from Berlin to Toruń in 1852. The unveiling ceremony took place on October 25, 1853.

In 2003, the monument underwent significant renovation to mark its 150th anniversary. This restoration included the reinstallation of a bronze dolphin fountain and a reservoir beneath it, enhancing the monument's historical and aesthetic value.
