Michael Lienau, born in Uetersen, made his fortune in New York through wine and textile trading. With his success, he returned to Germany with his second wife, Sarah Francis Van Vorst, and envisioned a luxurious residence amidst the serene landscape of the Pinnauniederung. The construction of Schloss Düneck was not without challenges; the sandy terrain required extensive landscaping, including the import of heavy clay soil to create the picturesque park that now surrounds the villa.

The villa was designed by Michael's brother, Detlef Lienau, a prominent architect in America known for introducing the French mansard roof style. Detlef’s work is characterized by a dedication to balance and purity, evident in the villa’s harmonious design. The villa's architectural plans, along with those of its auxiliary buildings, are preserved in the Avery Library at Columbia University, showcasing Detlef's meticulous attention to detail.

In 1905, the villa became a psychiatric clinic under the management of Eduard Schwab, Baas’s son-in-law. However, it closed in 1908 after a series of tragic incidents. The villa then lay dormant for years until it was acquired by the Landesbank Kiel in the early 20th century.

Preservation and Revival

In 1937, the Nordmark-Werke purchased Schloss Düneck. The villa narrowly escaped demolition in the 1980s when the local community rallied to save it, leading to its designation as a protected cultural monument. This effort ensured that Schloss Düneck would remain a cherished historical site.

After standing empty for years, the villa was purchased in 2021 by Andreas Hanitsch, a Hamburg-based entrepreneur experienced in restoring historic buildings. Under his stewardship, Schloss Düneck underwent extensive restoration, breathing new life into its storied halls. Today, it serves not only as a family residence but also as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, and celebrations, continuing its legacy as a place of gathering and joy.
