Lev!

Lev! Umeå

Lev!

In the heart of Umeå, a city known for its vibrant cultural scene and innovative spirit, lies an extraordinary piece of art that seamlessly blends functionality with creativity. Lev!, a 170-meter-long glass artwork, transforms the pedestrian and cycling tunnel between Järnvägstorget and the Haga district into a mesmerizing journey through art and literature. This tunnel, officially known as Stationstunneln, is more affectionately referred to as Lev-tunneln or Sara Lidman’s Passage, a tribute to the celebrated Swedish author whose words grace its walls.

The Birth of Lev!

The conception of Lev! was a collaborative effort initiated by the Sara Lidman Society, inspired by the literary quotes adorning Drottninggatan in Stockholm. Umeå Municipality, in partnership with the Swedish Transport Administration, commissioned the artwork as part of the redevelopment of the central station. The artistic duo FA+, comprised of Ingrid Falk and Gustavo Aguerre, were tasked with creating a piece that would not only beautify the tunnel but also provide a safer and more inviting environment for commuters.

Lev! forms part of FA+’s ambitious project, The Universal Library, which includes similar installations in cities like Buenos Aires, featuring quotes from literary giants such as Jorge Luis Borges. The tunnel in Umeå, however, holds a special place as it integrates both visual and auditory elements to create an immersive experience.

A Walk Through Art

As you step into Lev!, you are enveloped by a stunning glass wall that stretches over 700 square meters, making it one of Europe’s largest glass artworks. The wall comprises 186 double-glazed panels, each etched with photographic motifs, many of which depict scenes from Sara Lidman’s hometown, Missenträsk. Interspersed among these images are selected quotes from Lidman’s works, chosen through a public consultation process and carefully curated by FA+ and the Sara Lidman Society.

The quotes, rendered in elegant typography, offer insights into Lidman’s thoughts and philosophies, inviting passersby to pause and reflect. The most prominent of these is the word “Lev!”—meaning “Live!”—a signature exhortation from Lidman that she often inscribed in her books. This call to embrace life is immortalized in a gleaming metal sign at the northern end of the tunnel, as well as on an illuminated bench outside the station.

An Auditory Experience

Lev! is not just a feast for the eyes but also a treat for the ears. The glass wall is backlit and equipped with a sophisticated sound system that plays a symphony of 16 audio channels. Four of these channels are interactive, triggered by touchpoints on the wall. As you explore the tunnel, you might hear Sara Lidman’s voice reciting poetry or speaking passionately about global issues like Vietnam and South Africa. Other channels fill the space with the soothing sounds of birdsong, creating a tranquil atmosphere that contrasts with the hustle and bustle of city life.

The original soundscape was crafted by Per Erik Rylander, with new compositions by composer Lisa Stenberg introduced in 2014, ensuring that the auditory experience remains fresh and engaging.

A Controversial Yet Celebrated Masterpiece

Lev! has not been without its controversies. Just before its inauguration, a quote suggesting that people write something on the wall to let others know how you feel was temporarily covered due to concerns it might incite graffiti. This decision sparked debate, highlighting the delicate balance between artistic expression and public interpretation. Nevertheless, the covering was removed before the official unveiling, allowing the artwork to be appreciated in its entirety.

The tunnel and its artistic embellishments were honored with the Upper Norrland Architecture Prize in 2014, recognized for its exemplary design that enhances the urban landscape while serving a practical purpose.

Visiting Lev!

A visit to Lev! is a must for anyone exploring Umeå. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, the tunnel offers a unique experience that combines art, literature, and sound in a way that is both thought-provoking and aesthetically pleasing. As you wander through this vibrant passageway, take a moment to absorb the quotes and images, let the sounds wash over you, and perhaps, feel inspired to “Live!” in the spirit of Sara Lidman.

Lev! is more than just a tunnel; it’s a testament to Umeå’s commitment to culture and innovation, a symbol of the city’s ability to transform everyday spaces into extraordinary experiences. So next time you find yourself in Umeå, don’t just pass through—take the time to truly experience Lev! and let it leave an indelible mark on your journey.
