Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center

Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center Valparaiso

Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center

In the heart of Valparaiso University’s picturesque campus, the Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center stands as a beacon of German heritage and academic excellence. This unique establishment is more than just a building; it is a vibrant cultural hub where students and visitors alike can immerse themselves in the rich traditions and contemporary culture of Germany.

A Living-Learning Community

On the upper floor of the Kade-Duesenberg German House, you will find a dynamic living-learning environment. Here, up to twelve students who are passionate about the German language and culture reside with a native-speaker Resident Assistant. This immersive experience is designed to foster fluency and a deeper understanding of German culture. The residents cook together five nights a week, creating authentic German dishes and sharing meals, all while conversing exclusively in German. This unique setup not only enhances language skills but also builds a tight-knit community among the students.

Academic and Cultural Programming

The lower floor of the building is dedicated to academic and cultural activities. It houses two well-equipped classrooms where students can engage in interactive learning sessions. The space is also used for a variety of programming, including film screenings, workshops, and a weekly coffee hour where students and faculty can gather to discuss German culture and current events. One of the highlights is the Kinder lernen Deutsch class, where elementary-aged children are introduced to the German language through fun and engaging activities.

Exhibitions and Events

The Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center frequently hosts exhibitions on German history, literature, and art. These exhibitions provide a window into the rich cultural tapestry of Germany and are a great way to learn about the country’s contributions to the world. The center also organizes special events throughout the year, such as traditional German celebrations and guest lectures by experts in various fields related to German studies.

A Modern Architectural Marvel

The building itself is a testament to modern architectural design, inspired by the German Bauhaus movement of the 1920s. Completed in 2000, the two-story, 10,200-square-foot structure was designed by Design Organization and funded by the Max Kade Foundation along with alumni benefactors Richard and Phyllis Duesenberg and Robert and Lori Duesenberg. Its sleek lines and functional design earned it the 2001 Commercial Project of the Year award and the Community Improvement Award from the Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce and the Porter County Builders Association, Inc.

A Rich History

The journey of the Kade-Duesenberg German House began with a traditional German Richtfest ceremony on December 6, 1999. This ceremony marked the completion of the building’s framework and included remarks from benefactors and university representatives, as well as musical performances and a toast in German. The dedication of the center took place on September 23, 2000, with notable attendees including the German ambassador and the head of the German Cultural Affairs Department. This event coincided with the celebration of Valparaiso University’s 75th year of affiliation with the Lutheran University Association, making it a significant milestone in the university’s history.

A Decade of Excellence

In 2010, the Kade-Duesenberg German House celebrated its 10-year anniversary. Over the years, it has become a cornerstone of the university’s German program, thanks in large part to the dedicated leadership of its directors. Dr. Sarah DeMaris, the center’s first director, played a pivotal role in establishing its programs and fostering a vibrant community. After her retirement, Dr. Jennifer Bjornstad took over the reins, continuing to build on the strong foundation and ensuring that the center remains a dynamic and engaging place for students and visitors.

Visiting the Kade-Duesenberg German House

Whether you are a student, a scholar, or simply a lover of German culture, the Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center offers a wealth of opportunities to learn, explore, and connect. From its immersive living-learning community to its diverse programming and events, there is always something happening at the center. Visitors are welcome to attend public events, explore the exhibitions, and experience the welcoming atmosphere that makes this place so special.

In conclusion, the Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center is a shining example of how cultural and academic pursuits can come together to create a truly enriching experience.
