Heureka

Heureka Vantaa

Heureka

Heureka, also known locally as Tiedekeskus Heureka, is a beacon of scientific wonder nestled in the Tikkurila district of Vantaa, Finland. Just a short journey north of Helsinki, this science center has been captivating minds and sparking curiosity since its grand opening in 1989. Designed by Heikkinen – Komonen Architects, Heureka stands as a testament to the joy of discovery and the pursuit of knowledge, drawing in around 300,000 visitors each year.

A Journey Through Time and Space

Heureka's mission is to make science accessible and engaging for everyone. This is achieved through a blend of permanent and rotating exhibitions, hands-on activities, and a state-of-the-art planetarium. The name Heureka itself, derived from the Greek exclamation Eureka! attributed to Archimedes, perfectly encapsulates the spirit of discovery that permeates the center.

Interactive Exhibits and Hands-On Learning

One of the standout features of Heureka is its interactive exhibits. These are designed to encourage visitors to engage directly with scientific concepts, testing theories and exploring ideas independently. The main exhibition hall, a cylindrical space inspired by Gunnar Asplund's design at the Stockholm city library, houses around 200 exhibits. These cover a wide range of scientific fields, from the inner workings of the human body to the intricacies of urban planning.

Among the permanent exhibits, you'll find the Foucault pendulum, which demonstrates the Earth's rotation, and the wire wheel suspended from the ceiling. The exhibition space is regularly updated, ensuring that there is always something new to discover. Highlights include The Wind in the Bowels, an exploration of the digestive system, and About a Coin, a collaboration with the Mint of Finland that delves into the history and production of currency.

Temporary Exhibitions and Global Reach

In addition to its permanent displays, Heureka hosts two temporary exhibitions at any given time. These exhibits cover a diverse array of topics, from dinosaurs and ancient cultures to the art of film and the wonders of flight. Notably, Heureka's dinosaur exhibitions have been particularly popular, with the 2001 exhibit on dinosaur family life attracting a record-breaking 406,000 visitors.

Many of Heureka's exhibitions are also showcased internationally, bringing Finnish ingenuity to science centers around the world. This global reach underscores Heureka's commitment to fostering a love of science and learning beyond Finland's borders.

Exploring the Cosmos in the Planetarium

No visit to Heureka would be complete without a trip to the digital planetarium. With 135 seats, this immersive space offers breathtaking journeys through the universe. Whether you're exploring distant galaxies or delving into the mysteries of our own solar system, the planetarium's shows are both educational and awe-inspiring.

Science Park Galilei: An Outdoor Adventure

Heureka's scientific exploration extends beyond its walls with the Science Park Galilei, an outdoor exhibition area open during the summer months. Spanning 7,500 square meters, this scientific playground features exhibits that explore mathematical, physical, and musical phenomena, many of which incorporate water as a key element. The park also includes moving works of art, such as the sand plotter by Finnish artist Osmo Valtonen, and an arboretum showcasing conifer species from the northern hemisphere.

Additionally, the area in front of Heureka features a permanent bedrock exhibition. This display includes both common and rare rock types found in Finland's bedrock, arranged to reflect their geographical distribution across the country. It's a fascinating reminder that science isn't limited to technological advancements but also encompasses the natural world and its long cycles.

A Hub of Scientific Excellence

Heureka is more than just a science center; it's a hub of scientific excellence and collaboration. Operated by the Finnish Science Centre Foundation, Heureka benefits from the support and active participation of the Finnish scientific community, education sector, trade and industry, and various levels of government. This broad base of cooperation ensures that Heureka remains at the forefront of scientific education and innovation.

Under the leadership of Director Mikko Myllykoski since September 2020, Heureka continues to evolve and expand its offerings. The center's commitment to providing the joy of discovery to everyone is evident in every exhibit, program, and event it hosts.

Plan Your Visit

Whether you're a curious child, a budding scientist, or simply someone with a passion for learning, Heureka offers something for everyone. With its engaging exhibits, educational programs, and beautiful outdoor spaces, it's a place where science comes to life in the most exciting and accessible ways imaginable. So, if you find yourself in Vantaa, make sure to set aside some time to explore Heureka – a world of discovery awaits!
