Church of Peace

Church of Peace Varel

Church of Peace

The Church of Peace, known locally as Friedenskirche, stands as a tranquil beacon of faith and history in the charming town of Varel, Niedersachsen, Germany. This beautiful church, which serves the Baptist community of Varel, has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century, and its serene architecture and peaceful ambiance make it a must-visit for anyone exploring the region.

A Brief History

The Church of Peace is a successor to the original chapel built in 1858 by the newly established Baptist community in Varel. The need for a larger and more modern place of worship became evident in the early 20th century, and plans for a new building were set in motion. Despite the outbreak of World War I, which delayed construction, the congregation's determination saw the project through. Under the leadership of Johann Schütte, a new building commission was formed, and the construction was eventually completed. On January 29, 1922, the Church of Peace was officially inaugurated, marking a significant milestone for the Baptist community in Varel.

Architectural Charm

The Church of Peace is an architectural gem, blending simplicity with elegance. The building features two main entrances: one facing Mühlenstraße and the other, the primary entrance, on Johann-Gerhard-Oncken-Straße. As you step through the main entrance, you are welcomed into a spacious foyer that houses the congregation's book table, offering a curated selection of Christian literature.

One of the unique features of the Church of Peace is its cloakroom, a common element in Baptist churches. This reflects the community's sense of home and belonging, as it is customary for members to remove their coats upon entering, just as they would in their own homes. The foyer also contains personalized mailboxes for each member of the congregation, a thoughtful touch that fosters a sense of community and connection.

The Organ

Music plays a vital role in the life of the Church of Peace, and the church's organ is a testament to this. The original organ, built in 1922 by the Klassmeier company from Kirchheide, was a two-manual instrument with seven registers. In 1954, a new organ was installed by Alfred Führer of Wilhelmshaven. This instrument, with its eleven registers spread across two manuals and a pedal, continues to fill the church with beautiful, resonant music during services and special events.

The Legacy of Johann Gerhard Oncken

Varel holds a special place in the history of the Baptist movement in Germany, being the birthplace of Johann Gerhard Oncken, a prominent figure in the establishment of Baptist churches across the country. Born on January 31, 1800, Oncken's legacy is honored in Varel through various commemorations, including a street named after him and memorial plaques at significant locations in the town.

The Baptist community in Varel began to take shape in the mid-19th century, significantly influenced by the religious awakening of Wilm Schütte, a local ship captain who moved to Varel and established connections with the burgeoning Baptist movement in the Oldenburg region. The first Baptist baptism in Varel took place in 1843, marking the beginning of a vibrant and growing community.

By 1856, the Varel Baptists had established themselves as an independent congregation, separate from their mother church in Jever. Over the years, the community continued to grow and thrive, with significant contributions from figures such as August Friedrich Wilhelm Haese, who served as the pastor for 44 years and baptized over 200 individuals during his tenure.

A Place of Peace and Reflection

Today, the Church of Peace stands as a serene place of worship and reflection. Its well-preserved architecture and tranquil surroundings provide a perfect setting for contemplation and spiritual renewal. The church's commitment to fostering a sense of community and belonging is evident in every aspect of its design and operation, from the welcoming foyer to the personalized mailboxes and the beautiful organ music that fills the air.

Visitors to Varel will find the Church of Peace to be a place of quiet beauty and historical significance. Whether you are interested in its architectural charm, its rich history, or simply seeking a moment of peace, the Church of Peace offers a warm welcome to all who enter its doors. As you explore this lovely town, be sure to take the time to visit this remarkable church and experience its unique blend of history, community, and tranquility.
