The History of Pont de la Libération

The town's leaders decided that a second bridge was necessary to accommodate the increasing demand. Initial proposals for a metal bridge were rejected to preserve the navigability of the Lot River. However, by 1908, the need for a new bridge became undeniable due to the introduction of a tramway and the saturation of traffic on the old bridge.

In 1912, the project designed by the renowned engineer Eugène Freyssinet was selected by a jury chaired by Georges Leygues. Freyssinet's design featured a single massive concrete arch with a span of 96.25 meters, setting a world record for this type of structure at the time. The construction was undertaken by the Société Mercier, Limousin & Cie, formed in January 1914, with Freyssinet serving as the technical director.

Construction began promptly, but the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 caused significant disruptions. Despite these challenges, the arches were completed by non-mobilized personnel, and the innovative method of decentering the arches, developed by Freyssinet, was employed in December 1915. This technique allowed for precise control of the elastic deformations of the arch, earning Freyssinet the prestigious Caméré Prize from the Academy of Sciences.

After the war, construction resumed in 1919, and the main structure was completed within the same year. The tramway operated on the bridge's deck from 1923 to 1935. In recognition of its historical and architectural significance, the Pont de la Libération was awarded the Heritage of the 20th Century label in 2007.

Architectural Marvel of Pont de la Libération

The Pont de la Libération is a testament to early 20th-century engineering prowess. The bridge's deck measures 10.90 meters in width, including two 1.80-meter-wide sidewalks and a 7.30-meter-wide roadway designed to accommodate a tramway. The deck is supported by two parallel concrete arches, each 3.03 meters wide and spaced 4.90 meters apart. The arches span 96.25 meters at the water level, extending to 98 meters at a depth of 2.50 meters below the surface.

At the time of its construction, the bridge's arch was the largest span for an unreinforced concrete arch in the world. The use of unreinforced concrete was an economical solution, and the arch's design follows a sixth-degree parabolic curve to distribute the weight evenly. The thickness of the arches varies, with a maximum thickness of 1.45 meters at the keystone and increased thickness at the supports to limit ground pressure.

The concrete used for the arches was mixed with 350 kg/m3 of cement, while the visible surfaces were made with a higher concentration of 600 kg/m3 to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal. The bridge's deck is supported by lightly reinforced concrete piers clad in bricks, giving the structure a distinctive appearance. These piers are topped with small brick capitals, and their width varies according to their height. The piers also support an external viaduct with full arches, adding to the bridge's visual grandeur.
