The Wasserturm did not escape the ravages of World War II unscathed. It suffered significant damage, yet by 1953, it was restored and continued to serve as a water reservoir until the 1980s. As the decades passed, the tower's role evolved, and by the 1990s, it was no longer in active use, its last caretaker having moved on.
In the early 2000s, efforts to preserve the tower's architectural integrity led to a thorough renovation of its roof and framework. However, finding a new purpose for the structure proved challenging until it was sold in 2008 to a cooperative with a vision for transformation.
Between October 2009 and June 2011, the Wasserturm underwent a remarkable conversion. Four holiday apartments were artfully integrated into its historic framework, offering guests a unique lodging experience steeped in history. This imaginative reuse not only preserved the building but also breathed new life into it, turning it into a sought-after destination.
