The church was first documented in 1139 and was among the four episcopal chaplaincies, which meant it could only be staffed by a cathedral canon. After a devastating city fire in the early 15th century, which destroyed the previous structure, the current Gothic hall church was constructed. In 1913/14, the church underwent significant renovations, adding a tower group and a new main portal, further enhancing its grandeur.
