Dartmouth Park

Dartmouth Park West Bromwich

Dartmouth Park

Situated just half a mile east of West Bromwich town centre, Dartmouth Park is a verdant oasis of tranquility and historical charm. Spanning 23.9 hectares (59 acres), this Grade II listed park, managed by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, has been a cherished green space for residents and visitors alike since its opening in 1878. Its rich history, diverse facilities, and picturesque landscapes make it an unmissable destination for anyone exploring the West Midlands.

The Birth of Dartmouth Park

The inception of Dartmouth Park can be traced back to 1876 when Reuben Farley, an alderman of West Bromwich, proposed the creation of a public park. Farley approached William Legge, the 5th Earl of Dartmouth, with a request to lease land from the Dartmouth estate. After much deliberation, 20.2 hectares (50 acres) of land at Cooper's Hill were leased for 99 years at a nominal rent of £1 per year. The design of the park was entrusted to John Maclean of Donnington Park in Leicestershire, whose vision transformed the area into a beautifully landscaped retreat. The Earl of Dartmouth generously donated trees, shrubs, and a fountain from his home, Patshull Hall, further enhancing the park's appeal.

A Grand Opening

Dartmouth Park was officially opened on June 3, 1878, by Reuben Farley and the Earl of Dartmouth. The event was a grand affair, attracting around 40,000 people who celebrated the day as a general holiday. The park quickly became a beloved spot for leisure and recreation, with its lush greenery and carefully planned layout providing a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Twentieth Century Transformations

The park's freehold was transferred to the people in 1919, marking a new chapter in its history. In 1923, a war memorial funded by public subscription was unveiled by William Legge, the 6th Earl of Dartmouth, to honor those who had fallen in the Great War. This poignant monument remains a significant feature of the park, offering a place for reflection and remembrance.

The 1930s saw further developments, including the construction of a new bandstand in 1933, replacing the original structure. The refreshment rooms, run by former footballer Joe Johnson and his wife from the 1940s, became a popular spot for visitors to relax and enjoy a snack.

However, the 1970s brought significant changes with the construction of the Expressway (part of the A41 road), which linked the north of West Bromwich with the M5 motorway. This development removed approximately 2.4 hectares (5.9 acres) from the park's south-western edge, including the tennis courts and golf course. Despite these alterations, Dartmouth Park continued to be a cherished green space for the community.

Restoration and Renewal

In 2008, Dartmouth Park received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council for a comprehensive restoration project. The improvements included the construction of a new bandstand on the site of the original, a children's play area, and the installation of lighting along pathways. Existing paths were resurfaced, and new ones were added, enhancing accessibility and enjoyment for all visitors. The park was officially re-opened in September 2014, marking the beginning of a new era for this historic green space.

Exploring Dartmouth Park Today

Today, Dartmouth Park boasts a wide range of facilities that cater to visitors of all ages. Ornamental lakes and floral displays provide a feast for the eyes, while outdoor gym equipment offers a fun way to stay active. The children's play area is a hit with younger visitors, and the sensory garden provides a unique experience for all the senses.
