Cathedral of Saint Peter

Cathedral of Saint Peter Wilmington

Cathedral of Saint Peter

In the heart of Wilmington, Delaware, within the historic Quaker Hill district, stands the Cathedral of Saint Peter, a beacon of faith and architectural splendor. This remarkable edifice is not only the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wilmington but also a testament to the rich history and vibrant community that surrounds it. Its storied past and stunning design make it a must-visit for anyone exploring the city.

The Birth and Growth of Saint Peter's Church

The journey of the Cathedral of Saint Peter began in 1816, with the visionary design of Pierre Bauduy. Originally conceived as a modest 30-by-40-foot Romanesque-style structure, the church quickly became a cornerstone of the community. Dedicated on September 12, 1818, the first mass was celebrated the following day by Father Patrick Kenny, marking the beginning of a long-standing spiritual tradition.

Over the years, the church expanded to accommodate its growing congregation. In 1829, a bell tower was added, and the building was extended to its current length of 60 feet. These early developments set the stage for Saint Peter's transformation into a cathedral.

The Path to Cathedral Status

The establishment of the Diocese of Wilmington by Pope Pius IX in 1868 was a pivotal moment for Saint Peter's. This designation prompted a series of renovations aimed at elevating the church to cathedral status. Starting in 1870, the church underwent significant enhancements, including the addition of frescoes, a marble baptistery, three altars, a chancel railing, and a barrel-domed roof. The Munich-style stained glass windows, likely crafted by Franz Xavier Zettler or his pupil Franz Mayer, added a touch of elegance and color.

Despite these improvements, the church was initially designated as a pro-cathedral due to its connection to a rectory and school, which conflicted with Vatican policies requiring a cathedral to be a free-standing building. However, further upgrades eventually led to its consecration as a cathedral.

Modern Renovations and Enhancements

The Cathedral of Saint Peter has continued to evolve, with renovations in 1981 and 1991 addressing structural concerns and adapting the sanctuary to post-Vatican II liturgical changes. The addition of flying buttresses and a steel substructure ensured the stability and longevity of this historic building.

In 2007, further renovations were undertaken to address new structural issues and enhance the worship experience. With the help of the Catholic Diocese Foundation and the cathedral's rector, Father Joseph Cocucci, the roof was replaced, and several interior changes were made. The cathedra was moved to the side of the sanctuary, the tabernacle was returned to its central location behind the altar, and a shrine to Mary was created to be accessible to those with physical disabilities. The baptismal font was also repositioned near the entrance, welcoming visitors as they step inside.

A Community Hub

Beyond its architectural and historical significance, the Cathedral of Saint Peter serves as a vibrant hub for the local community. It has been led by a succession of dedicated rectors since its founding, each contributing to the cathedral's enduring legacy. The current rector, Rev. Joseph M. P. R. Cocucci, continues to foster a welcoming environment for worship and community engagement.

The cathedral's role extends beyond religious services, hosting events and activities that bring people together. Its location in the Quaker Hill Historic District makes it a focal point for cultural and historical exploration, offering insights into the rich tapestry of Wilmington's past.
