Old Cemetery, Wurzen

Step into a serene oasis of history and greenery at the Old Cemetery in Wurzen, Saxony, Germany. Known locally as Sachgesamtheit Alter Friedhof mit Gefallenendenkmal, this picturesque park offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty. Once a bustling burial ground, the Old Cemetery has transformed into a peaceful park that invites visitors to explore its historic paths, monuments, and lush landscapes.

A Walk Through History

The Old Cemetery's origins date back to 1548, when it was established as a burial site next to the Johannishospital. Over the centuries, the cemetery expanded beyond the city’s boundaries, reflecting the growth and changes within Wurzen. One of the most poignant reminders of its past is the Pesthäuschen, built in 1687 over the mass graves of plague victims from 1607. Restored in 1999, this small baroque structure stands as a testament to the city’s resilience.

Although the cemetery ceased operations in 1948, its historical significance endures. The transformation into a park began in 1975, incorporating the war memorial erected in 1929/1930. This transition from cemetery to park has preserved the site’s historical essence while inviting new generations to appreciate its beauty and stories.

Exploring the Park

Today, the Old Cemetery spans approximately 2.8 hectares and is divided into three main sections. The northern part features remnants of the old cemetery walls, the Ringelnatz Hill, and a charming tree-lined avenue. This area also houses the Pesthäuschen, offering a perfect spot for reflection and appreciation of the park’s historical context.

The central section is home to the war memorial, a striking open structure with pillars and an architrave designed by architect Oswin Hempel and sculptor Arthur Lange. This monument honors those who fell during World War I, with names inscribed on the inner sides of the pillars. Nearby, a water basin from around 1930 adds a touch of tranquility to the surroundings.

The southern part of the park, once the Bahnhofsvorplatz, has been redesigned into a welcoming entrance area. Originally a decorative garden space created between 1923 and 1925, it now features mature trees and thoughtful landscaping, making it an inviting gateway to the park.

Natural Beauty and Modern Additions

While the Old Cemetery is steeped in history, it also embraces modern elements that enhance its appeal as a recreational space. The Ringelnatz Hill, introduced in 2012 as part of the Entente Florale competition, adds a playful touch to the park. Nearby, a playground and fitness trail offer activities for visitors of all ages, making the park a vibrant community hub.

The park’s vegetation is a highlight in itself, with tree-lined avenues of summer and winter lindens dating back to around 1870. These majestic trees provide shade and a sense of continuity, connecting past and present. Among the original plantings are two blood beeches and two columnar oaks, which add to the park's diverse flora.
