A Journey Through Time

The history of the Rehobothkerk dates back to October 5, 1882, when the first congregation gathered in a local hall beside the orphanage on Torenlaan. These early meetings were held under the guidance of D. Wijting from Goes, who also conducted the first baptism service on November 20, 1884. This date is now considered the official beginning of the church community in Zeist.

In 1886, a small church building, affectionately known as the little church in the woods, was purchased by four individuals: Matthijs de Bruin, C. van Dam, J. van Ekeren, and T. van Ekeren. This charming church, surrounded by greenery and heather fields, served the community until it became too small to accommodate the growing congregation.

By 1912, a new church building on Torenlaan was inaugurated by the late Reverend H. Roelofsen, who served the community until 1927. This building continued to serve the congregation until the 1960s when the need for a larger space became apparent. The growth of the church community, which included members from surrounding towns like Driebergen, De Bilt, Bunnik, Houten, Werkhoven, and Doorn, necessitated the construction of a new, larger church.

The Birth of Rehobothkerk

The 1960s brought a favorable development for the Reformed community. As part of Zeist's core area plan, a land exchange was arranged, allowing the church to sell its old building to the municipality and acquire a new plot at the corner of Bergweg-Joubertlaan. This prime location in the town center was perfect for the construction of a new, modern church.

Before construction could begin, the old Reformed Old People's Home had to be demolished to make way for the new church. Once the site was cleared, plans were drawn up, and a building committee was formed to oversee the project. The result was the Rehobothkerk, a contemporary church building that reflected the architectural trends of the time while providing ample space for the growing congregation.

On June 1, 1972, the Rehobothkerk was officially opened with a service led by the late Reverend G.J. van de Noort. Since then, the church has continued to serve the community, with Reverend J.J. van Eckeveld currently ministering to the congregation.
