Kerkelijk centrum De Oase

Kerkelijk centrum De Oase Zoetermeer

Kerkelijk centrum De Oase

Nestled in the heart of Zoetermeer, Kerkelijk Centrum De Oase stands as a beacon of community and spirituality. This unique building, once a neglected gymnasium, has been transformed into a vibrant center for worship and gathering. Its story is one of transformation and renewal, reflecting the spirit of the Protestant community it serves.

The Transformation of De Oase

The journey of De Oase began in 1999 when the Protestant community acquired the building from the municipality of Zoetermeer. Originally a gymnasium complete with changing rooms and showers, the space was in dire need of renovation. With the vision of creating a welcoming church environment, extensive remodeling efforts were undertaken. By February 2000, the center was officially opened, marking a return to the location where the congregation first held services in the early 1970s.

The architectural mastermind behind this transformation was J. Bouwmeester, who skillfully converted the 550 square meter space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing church. The addition of a second entrance in October 2000, funded through community contributions, further enhanced the accessibility and appeal of De Oase.

The Church Hall

The heart of De Oase is undoubtedly its church hall, a spacious area measuring 21 by 12 meters. This hall can accommodate up to 280 people, making it an ideal venue for services and community events. To imbue the building with a distinct ecclesiastical character, a grand entrance with solid wooden doors was installed, surrounded by decorative tiles that add a touch of elegance.

One of the most striking features of the church hall is the 100-year-old wrought iron cross adorning the roof, a generous gift from the local Adventskerk community. Complementing this historic symbol is a modern chime, donated by the Hout- en Bouwbond CNV in celebration of their anniversary. Together, these elements create a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.

The Interior Design

Inside, the church hall boasts a modern liturgical center crafted from glass and cherry wood, designed by architect R. Bouwmeester. This centerpiece is a special gift from the community, symbolizing the events at Golgotha with its three crosses. Behind it, the cross of Christ is suspended, serving as a powerful reminder of faith and sacrifice.

The seating and other furnishings were thoughtfully repurposed from the former municipal center, ensuring that every aspect of the interior reflects a sense of continuity and sustainability. The vibrant stained glass windows, installed in 2004, depict the biblical journey of the Israelites through the desert, offering a metaphor for the spiritual journey of life.

The Organ

Music plays a vital role in the life of De Oase, and the church's organ is a testament to this. Originally built in 1978 by Verschueren~Heythysen, the organ was relocated from the old municipal center and meticulously adapted to fit the new church hall. The organ features a mechanical slider system with a range of tones and stops, providing a rich auditory experience during services. The resident organist, Arie Vooijs, brings the instrument to life, filling the hall with melodies that uplift and inspire.

A Community Hub

Beyond its function as a place of worship, De Oase serves as a vital hub for the Zoetermeer community. It hosts a variety of events, from concerts and workshops to social gatherings and support groups. The center's welcoming atmosphere and versatile spaces make it a popular choice for both religious and secular activities.

The story of Kerkelijk Centrum De Oase is one of transformation and resilience. From its humble beginnings as a gymnasium to its current status as a cherished community center, De Oase embodies the spirit of renewal and hope. Whether you are a local resident or a visitor to Zoetermeer, a visit to this remarkable center offers a glimpse into the heart of a vibrant and welcoming community.
