Wijnhuistoren

Wijnhuistoren Zutphen

Wijnhuistoren

Nestled in the charming streets of Zutphen, the Wijnhuistoren stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance and historical significance of the Netherlands. This iconic belfry, with its intricate design and storied past, offers a captivating glimpse into the rich tapestry of Zutphen’s history. As you wander through the town, the tower’s presence is both commanding and inviting, drawing you in with the promise of tales from centuries gone by.

The Historical Roots of Wijnhuistoren

The origins of the Wijnhuistoren date back to the early 14th century, when it was part of the Taverne Tho Vreden, a bustling inn that served as a hub for travelers and townsfolk alike. This establishment, which may have derived its name from its original military function as a motte-and-bailey castle, was a focal point for the community. By 1420, the town of Zutphen had acquired the building, transforming it into a multifaceted center that included a city weigh house, a guardhouse, and a venue for public announcements.

Fast forward to the early 17th century, and the tower as we know it began to take shape. In 1616, the city commissioned Westphalian stonemason Emond Helleraet to construct a new tower. The result was a stunning square base adorned with rich sandstone decorations, completed a few years later. By the 1640s, Helleraet, now the city’s master builder, had finished the octagonal upper structure, drawing inspiration from the works of Hendrick de Keyser, particularly the Zuiderkerk and Westerkerk towers in Amsterdam.

The Musical Legacy of the Carillon

In 1644, the Wijnhuistoren was graced with a carillon crafted by the renowned Hemony brothers, Pieter and François. This was their first tonally-tuned carillon, marking the beginning of their celebrated journey in carillon making. The tower’s clock, crafted by Jurriaan van Spraeckel, played a crucial role in the town’s timekeeping, synchronizing with the Zutphen sundial until the advent of the national time system in 1864.

Surviving the Flames of History

The Wijnhuistoren has withstood the test of time, surviving fires and wars that have engulfed its surroundings. In 1920, a devastating fire destroyed much of the wooden upper structure and the carillon. However, a restoration effort in 1924 saw the installation of a new carillon, only for it to be lost again during World War II due to theft by occupying forces. Remarkably, the tower itself emerged unscathed from the flames that consumed the Wijnhuis during the liberation.

Revitalization and Modern Day Charm

The post-war years saw the Wijnhuis rebuilt in 1955, albeit without the 17th-century sandstone staircase that once graced the Lange Hofstraat. Over the years, the building has housed various establishments, including a tourist information center and an Italian restaurant. Since the summer of 2016, visitors have had the opportunity to climb the tower, offering an unparalleled view of Zutphen and its picturesque surroundings.
