The Origins of the Historisches Museum Aurich

The dream of establishing a local museum in Aurich dates back to 1902. However, it wasn't until 1923 that a Heimatverein (local heritage association) was founded with the goal of creating a museum. Despite their efforts, financial constraints and a lack of public support led to the project being shelved. It wasn't until after World War II, in 1949, that a renewed effort was made to bring this vision to life. The Ostfriesische Landschaft, a regional cultural organization, provided a building for the museum in 1951, but once again, the plan fell through.

Fast forward to 1982, when a group of dedicated citizens, led by Friedrich Schuver, the then Oberkreisdirektor (senior district director), formed a support association. This time, the city of Aurich offered the Alte Kanzlei as the museum's location, with the promise of future expansion into adjacent rooms. The city began renovating the Alte Kanzlei in 1983, and by 1985, the Historisches Museum Aurich was officially opened by Johann-Tönjes Cassens, the then Minister for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony.

A Walk Through History

The museum is divided into six thematic sections, each offering a unique glimpse into different aspects of Aurich and East Frisia's history. As you step inside, you'll be transported back in time, exploring the evolution of the region through carefully curated exhibits and artifacts.

The first section, Geest and City, delves into the geographical and urban development of Aurich. It provides an insightful look at how the landscape and cityscape have evolved over centuries. Expansion and Modernization

In the early 1990s, the museum underwent significant expansion. With additional space becoming available in the adjacent building, the museum seized the opportunity to grow. Between 1992 and 1998, the museum was expanded and modernized with the support of the state of Lower Saxony. A new administrative wing and an educational room were added, enhancing the museum's ability to engage with visitors.

The first major expansion of the permanent exhibition took place in 1996, funded by the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation. This was followed by a substantial redesign and further spatial expansion in 1998, thanks to a generous grant from the state. The third phase of expansion in 2001 saw the creation of a new entrance area and the introduction of the MachMit-Museum on the ground floor of the annex, providing interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages.

A Modern Cultural Hub

Today, the Historisches Museum Aurich boasts 540 square meters of exhibition space and a 60 square meter event room for lectures and seminars. The museum's commitment to excellence has been recognized with the Museum Quality Seal from the Museumsverband Niedersachsen und Bremen e. V. three times, most recently in 2022.
