The Reformed parish church in Baden, known locally as Reformierte Kirche Baden, stands as a beacon of history and architectural beauty in the heart of Switzerland. This baroque masterpiece, completed in the early 18th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, set against the backdrop of the picturesque Swiss landscape.

The Historical Significance

The Reformed parish church's origin is deeply rooted in the political and religious upheavals of its time. Constructed after the Second Villmergen War in 1712, it was a symbol of victory for the Protestant forces of Bern and Zurich over the Catholic stronghold of Baden. Despite the tensions, the peace treaty allowed Baden to retain its Catholic identity, provided a space was made for Protestant worship. The result was this splendid church, built on the Spitalwiese near the Badstrasse, using stones from the dismantled Fortress Stein.

The church was designed by Abraham Dünz the Younger, with contributions from the Vorarlberg master builder Franz Beer. It was completed just in time for the Baden Peace Congress, marking the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. On July 1, 1714, Pastor Johann Jakob Wolf delivered the inaugural sermon, although the church lacked a local congregation due to restrictions on Protestant settlement in Baden.

Architectural Features

The Reformed parish church is a striking example of baroque architecture, characterized by its symmetrical design. The building's dimensions are a study in the Golden Ratio, with its length of 27.4 meters and width of 16.6 meters creating a harmonious proportion. The church's 32-meter-high tower is seamlessly integrated into the façade, with its ground floor forming a shared hall with the church itself.

Inside, the church is a testament to simplicity and elegance. The renovation between 2003 and 2007 restored the interior to its original 1714 color scheme, with walls painted in pristine white and adorned with pale blue capitals. The ceiling, adorned with stucco profiles, complements the serene atmosphere. Modern pentagonal chandeliers provide versatile lighting, enhancing the church's functionality for various events.

The Interior and Renovations

The interior of the Reformed parish church is designed to accommodate 250 people, with a layout that encourages community and worship. The space is divided into four distinct areas: the slightly elevated chancel, opposing pews with a central open space, traditional pews with a central aisle, and a generous meeting area near the entrance. This thoughtful arrangement allows for a range of activities, from worship services to community gatherings.

During the recent renovations, the church's two side entrances, removed in the 1940s, were restored, along with the original wainscoting. The altar area features a modern ensemble of wood and aluminum, with a central lectern, a baptismal font to the left, and a communion table to the right. A separate lectern in the central space mirrors this design, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic throughout.

The Musical Heritage

The current organ, installed in 1968 by Orgelbau Kuhn, boasts two manuals and 31 registers, replacing an earlier instrument by Friedrich Goll from 1874. The Bells and Legacy
