O'Kane's adventures took him across the United States, from supporting General Alfred Terry's column during the Battle of the Little Bighorn to managing world champion athletes on international tours. In 1903, he and his wife, Helen, settled in Bend, Oregon, where they built the Bend Hotel, a popular landmark that tragically burned down in 1915. Undeterred, O'Kane decided to construct a new commercial building on the same site, ensuring it would be fireproof and grand in design.
The O'Kane Building was designed by the renowned Beezer Brothers architectural firm from Seattle. Constructed by local contractor Fred Frodeson, the building was the largest commercial structure in Bend at the time of its completion. The original theater was later converted into a billiards parlor and café, and although it underwent significant alterations, the remodeled section was designed to match the rest of the building. Today, the building continues to thrive as a commercial space, maintaining its status as the largest commercial structure in downtown Bend.

A flight of steps with a midway landing leads to the second-floor hallway, an L-shaped corridor lined with offices along the Oregon Avenue and Bond Street sides. The corridor features textured plaster walls with dark wood trim, and the office entrances are adorned with dark wooden doors and large pebbled-glass-style inset windows. Much of the original brass and nickel hardware remains intact, preserving the building's historic charm.
