The Church of San Sebastián Mártir, nestled in the vibrant district of Carabanchel in Madrid, is a captivating blend of history and architecture. The History of the Church of San Sebastián Mártir

The origins of the Church of San Sebastián Mártir date back to the reign of the Catholic Monarchs in the late 15th century. The residents of Carabanchel Bajo decided to build a church dedicated to Saint Sebastian, a Roman martyr from the 3rd century, revered as a protector against the plague. On December 30, 1495, the Madrid Council granted a plot of land to the Carabanchel de Abajo Council for its construction. The original structure was a beautiful Mudéjar-style building made of brick, featuring three naves adorned with a Plateresque coffered ceiling.

In the 17th century, the church underwent significant renovations to align with the Baroque style prevalent in Madrid at the time. The naves were covered with vaults, concealing the earlier coffered ceiling. The interior was embellished with Corinthian pilasters and capitals, and a tower with a slate spire was erected, which still stands today. Two side chapels were added, dedicated to San José and El Carmen, each crowned with a dome.

Tragically, the church was destroyed in July 1936 at the onset of the Spanish Civil War, resulting in the loss of altarpieces, sculptures, paintings, and parish records.

The Rebirth of the Church

Between 1943 and 1948, the church was rebuilt under the supervision of the Directorate General of Devastated Regions, following the designs of architect Ignacio Fiter Clavé. The new structure was erected on the same site and maintained the dimensions of the original temple. It was blessed on January 20, 1948, by the then-auxiliary bishop of Madrid, Casimiro Morcillo.

The current church features three longitudinal naves of five sections, with the central nave being wider and taller, connected by arcades. The chancel is topped with a dome featuring an elevated lantern on pendentives. The facades are constructed of brick and masonry, covered with stucco, with granite plinths and limestone portals from Colmenar. The main portal showcases a stone sculpture of Saint Sebastian Martyr, while the secondary portal, opening to the Plaza de Carabanchel, features a sculpture of Our Lady of Antigua. The tower from the 17th century remains a prominent feature.

Community and Traditions

The Church of San Sebastián Mártir is home to three brotherhoods: the Congregation of Our Lady of Carmen and the Holy Christ Yacente, the Brotherhood of Santiago, and the Brotherhood of San José. These brotherhoods participate in processions during the festivities of El Carmen, Santiago, and Holy Week, bringing vibrant celebrations to the streets of Carabanchel.
