The Historical Tapestry of Weizigt

The story of Weizigt begins around 1700, when a house with a classicist garden stood proudly on what is now the Krispijnseweg. The estate's journey through time is marked by a series of illustrious owners, beginning with Mattheus van den Broucke and his wife, Elisabeth Francken. In 1722, Elisabeth purchased the property from Johan Bosman and commissioned the construction of a new house, laying the foundations for what would become Weizigt.

Over the years, Weizigt changed hands, eventually belonging to Johan van der Burch. Upon his death in 1771, the estate passed to his half-sister, Jonkvrouw Sophia Adriana Hoeufft, who, along with her husband Hendrik Onderwater, expanded the property with new acquisitions. It was likely Onderwater who transformed a double house into the current grand mansion we see today.

The De Roo Legacy

In 1782, the estate found a new steward in Boudewijn de Roo, who undertook significant renovations in 1794, as commemorated by the date on the mansion’s façade. The 19th century saw further developments, including the construction of an orangery in 1834 and a coach house in 1886. However, as Dordrecht expanded, the idyllic seclusion of Weizigt was gradually encroached upon by urban development, leading the De Roo family to retreat to other residences.

From Private Estate to Public Park

In 1942, the municipality of Dordrecht acquired the Weizigt estate. Post-war, the mansion served various purposes, including a sanatorium and a nursing home, before becoming office space. The surrounding park was transformed into a public space, designed to connect the city center with its outskirts. Today, it remains a beloved city park, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Architectural Marvels of Weizigt

The Weizigt mansion, along with its orangery and coach house, has been designated a national monument. The mansion itself is a block-shaped structure featuring a basement, a bel-etage, and a second floor, all topped with a hipped roof. The façade, constructed with Utrecht bricks and adorned with a central pediment, exudes a stately charm. Although much of the original interior has been lost to time and renovations, remnants such as the marble floor and stucco ceiling offer a glimpse into its former grandeur.

The Orangery and Coach House

The orangery, built in 1834 in the Empire style, is a testament to the estate's historical elegance. Although currently in a state of disrepair, plans for restoration and relocation near the coach house are underway. The coach house itself, constructed in 1886 in an eclectic style, now serves as a hub for the Weizigt Sustainability Center, continuing the estate's tradition of adaptation and renewal.

The park surrounding Weizigt is a verdant oasis that has evolved over the centuries. Originally laid out in a classicist style, it later embraced the English landscape garden aesthetic.
