Hilo Masonic Lodge Hall-Bishop Trust Building

The Hilo Masonic Lodge Hall-Bishop Trust Building stands as a testament to Hilo's rich history and architectural elegance. Nestled in the heart of Hilo, Hawaii, this historic structure captures the imagination with its Renaissance Revival style and storied past. Constructed between 1908 and 1910, the building has served various roles over the decades, from a Masonic lodge to a commercial hub, and continues to be a focal point of local heritage.

A Journey Through Time

The origins of the Hilo Masonic Lodge trace back to 1896, when it was founded in the home of William W. Goodale. Officially chartered as Kilauea Lodge #330 in 1897, it holds the distinction of being the first Masonic lodge on the island of Hawaii. The lodge was aptly named after the nearby active Kīlauea volcano, symbolizing strength and resilience.

John Troup Moir, a prominent figure in Hilo's history and manager of the Onomea sugarcane plantation, played a pivotal role in the lodge’s early days. His leadership helped secure a prime location for the lodge, overcoming public protests and land swaps to establish a central and accessible site in downtown Hilo.

Architectural Marvel

The building's design was entrusted to Henry F. Starbuck, a renowned architect and Freemason from Oakland, California. Starbuck's vision brought forth a structure that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing, incorporating reinforced concrete to ensure durability against the elements. The Renaissance Revival style is evident in its elegant façade, characterized by arched windows and intricate detailing.

Inside, visitors are greeted by a grand granite stairway adorned with an ornate oak balustrade, leading to the second and third floors. The second floor, once a ceremonial temple room, boasts high ceilings and cast brass suspended lighting fixtures, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of Masonic gatherings in the early 20th century.

A Hub of Activity

Throughout its history, the Hilo Masonic Lodge Hall-Bishop Trust Building has been a bustling center of activity. The ground floor initially hosted various commercial enterprises, including Bishop Bank, now known as First Hawaiian Bank. In the 1990s, a restoration effort breathed new life into the building, adding modern amenities while preserving its historical charm.

In 2001, Howard and Mary Ann Rogers acquired the building, transforming it into the Kaikodo Building and opening a restaurant on the ground floor in 2003. Their vision included an Asian art gallery on the second floor, further enriching Hilo's cultural landscape. Though the restaurant faced challenges, it highlighted the building's potential as a vibrant community space.

Preserving the Past

Recognizing its historical significance, the building was added to the state registry of historic places in 1993 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. These designations underscore the building's importance as a cultural and architectural landmark, ensuring its preservation for future generations to appreciate.

The Hilo Masonic Lodge Hall-Bishop Trust Building continues to be a beacon of history amidst the evolving urban landscape of Hilo. Its walls echo stories of the past, from Masonic rituals to modern-day gatherings, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.
