Notre-Dame Collegiate Church

Notre-Dame Collegiate Church Huy

Notre-Dame Collegiate Church

Perched gracefully on the banks of the Meuse River in the charming town of Huy, Belgium, the Notre-Dame Collegiate Church, known locally as the Collegiale kerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw en Domitianus van Hoei, is a splendid example of Gothic architecture. This magnificent structure, built over several centuries from 1311 to 1536, stands as a testament to the rich history and religious heritage of the region. Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply a curious traveler, the Notre-Dame Collegiate Church is a must-visit destination that promises to captivate and inspire.

The Historical Tapestry of Notre-Dame Collegiate Church

The history of the Notre-Dame Collegiate Church is as intricate and layered as the architectural details that adorn its walls. The site on which the church stands has been a place of worship since the 4th century, with no fewer than five religious edifices preceding the current structure. The fourth church, a Romanesque masterpiece built by Theoduin of Bavaria around 1066, still leaves its mark today with a crypt that remains accessible from the right side aisle of the current church.

The foundation stone of the present-day Notre-Dame Collegiate Church was laid on March 15, 1311, by Prince-Bishop Thibaut de Bar. The construction of the choir was completed and consecrated to Our Lady in 1377, but the entire church was not finished until 1536. The church has endured its fair share of trials, including a devastating fire in 1803, but extensive restorations in the mid-19th century and from 1889 to 2010 have preserved its grandeur for future generations to admire.

Architectural Marvels

The Notre-Dame Collegiate Church is a harmonious blend of Rayonnant Gothic and Flamboyant Gothic styles, reflecting the architectural evolution that took place over the two centuries of its construction. One of the church's most distinctive features is its trio of square towers: the prominent tower facing the Meuse River and the twin towers on the city side. These towers not only add to the church's majestic silhouette but also serve as beacons of the town's historical and cultural identity.

Another architectural highlight is the grand window of the choir, which is composed of three parts, each soaring to an impressive height of 22 meters. This window bathes the interior in a celestial light, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere that enhances the spiritual experience of visitors.

The Crypt and Treasures

Underneath the Notre-Dame Collegiate Church lies a Romanesque crypt, discovered in June 1906 by Curé-Doyen Demaret. This ancient crypt now houses the 'Treasure of the Cathedral,' a remarkable collection of precious religious artifacts. Among the treasures are four notable Mosan shrines from the 12th and 13th centuries: the Shrine of the Virgin, the Shrine of Saint Domitian, the Shrine of Saint Mengold, and the Shrine of Saint Mark. Visitors can also admire the cross and chalice that belonged to Theoduin of Bavaria, dating back to the 11th century.

The Treasure of the Collegiate Church is accessible at specific times throughout the year, offering a unique glimpse into the religious and artistic heritage of the region.

The Bethléem Gate

Adjacent to the choir of the church stands the imposing Bethléem Gate, a striking example of Gothic craftsmanship. The central ogive of the gate, likely from the 14th century, is divided into three sections depicting scenes from the Nativity, the Massacre of the Innocents, and the Adoration of the Magi. Two smaller lateral ogives, added in the late 19th century, complete this intricate tableau. The Bethléem Gate underwent a comprehensive restoration, which was completed in November 2014, ensuring that its beauty and historical significance are preserved for future generations.

Li Rondia: A Radiant Rosace

One of the most celebrated features of the Notre-Dame Collegiate Church is Li Rondia, the largest Gothic rose window in Belgium. This stunning window, with a diameter of 6 meters (extended to 9 meters with its stone framework), is one of the four marvels of Huy. The original stained glass was destroyed during World War II, but new windows were created in 1973-1974 by the master glassmaker Raymond Julin. The vibrant blue and red hues of the glass evoke the joy, vitality, and spiritual happiness that the window was designed to symbolize.
