The Enchanting Legend

The origins of the Basilica of Our Lady of Hanswijk are shrouded in an enchanting legend that dates back to the 10th century. It is said that a ship, laden with goods and a statue of the Virgin Mary, became stranded on the banks of the River Dyle near the hamlet of Hanswijk. Despite the sailors' best efforts, the ship remained stuck until someone suggested moving the statue to the shore. Miraculously, the vessel was freed, leading the locals to believe that the Virgin Mary wished to be venerated at that very spot. Thus, a small chapel was built, which quickly became a renowned pilgrimage site.

A Place of Pilgrimage

The chapel's fame grew, and by 1263, it was mentioned by Thomas of Cantimpré, a Dominican scholar. In 1272, a devastating plague struck Mechelen, and the people of Hanswijk carried the statue to St. Rumbold's Cathedral. The plague soon subsided, and in gratitude, an annual procession was established, a tradition that continues to this day.

The Baroque Marvel

The current basilica, a stunning example of baroque architecture, was constructed between 1663 and 1681, based on designs by the talented architect Lucas Faydherbe. The building's foundation stone was laid by Archbishop Andreas Creusen, and it was consecrated in 1678. The church features a remarkable combination of longitudinal and central architectural elements, with a rotunda measuring 15.5 meters in diameter and a dome soaring to 34 meters.

Architectural Splendor

The basilica's design is both innovative and elegant. The nave is interrupted by a grand rotunda, around which the transept is arranged. Due to the immense pressure exerted by the dome, the supporting columns were reinforced with tie beams and anchors, cleverly concealed with stucco to maintain the interior's aesthetic appeal. The church is adorned with busts of the Latin Church Fathers, including works by Faydherbe and Jan-Frans Boeckstuyns.

The Exquisite Pulpit

One of the basilica's most striking features is its ornate pulpit, crafted by the Mechelen sculptor Theodoor Verhaegen between 1743 and 1746. This masterpiece depicts life-size statues of Adam and Eve, with Jahweh pointing to a medallion of the Virgin Mary and Child, symbolizing forgiveness and salvation. The pulpit is crowned by a grand tree with angels lifting Mary towards the heavens, a breathtaking sight for all who visit.

Annual Processions and Celebrations

The statue of the Virgin Mary, now made of walnut and standing at 1.45 meters tall, is carried through the streets each year during the Hanswijk procession. Though the original statue was lost in the 16th century, the current one continues to be a focal point of devotion. In 1876, the statue was canonically crowned by Cardinal Victor-Auguste Dechamps on behalf of Pope Pius IX, a significant event in the basilica's history.

A Papal Visit

In 1985, the basilica welcomed Pope John Paul II, who visited on a pilgrimage during his 65th birthday. This momentous occasion underscored the basilica's importance as a spiritual and cultural landmark. Two years later, in 1987, the church was elevated to the status of a basilica, cementing its place in the hearts of believers and visitors alike.
