By September 1939, plans were underway to construct a new church, designed to serve as a beacon of hope and faith for the local community.

The new church was designed by architects Ramón Aníbal Álvarez and Pablo Cantó Iniesta, members of the Group of Spanish Artists and Technicians for the Progress of Contemporary Architecture. Their vision was brought to life with the help of builders Sixto Erquiaga and the Segura-Jaúregui brothers. The construction was a significant investment, with costs eventually doubling from the initial budget due to the scale and ambition of the project. The Church of San Nicolás was officially inaugurated on May 6, 1945, although its bell tower was not completed until 1955. The project was so well-regarded that it earned second place in the 1945 National Architecture Competition.
