Church of Saint John of Nepomuk

The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk, or Kostel svatého Jana Nepomuckého as it is known locally, stands proudly in the vibrant city of Plzeň, Czech Republic. This splendid structure, nestled at the corner of Klatovská Street and Chodské Square, is a testament to the rich tapestry of Czech history and architectural prowess. Its towering presence not only dominates the skyline but also captivates the hearts of all who visit.

The Historical Tapestry

The origins of the Church of Saint John of Nepomuk are deeply intertwined with the arrival of the Redemptorists, a religious congregation, in Plzeň in 1907. Just two years later, in 1909, ambitious plans were laid out for the construction of not only the church but also an adjoining monastery. However, the monastery's construction was delayed until 1935. The church itself began to take shape in 1910, with its foundation stone laid on the feast day of Saint John of Nepomuk, a revered Czech saint.

Designed by architects Jan Svoboda and František Stalmach, the church was constructed in a Neo-Romanesque style by the local building firm Müller and Kapsa. By 1911, the church, complete with its iconic twin towers, was consecrated on October 22. Over the years, it has undergone numerous renovations, including a comprehensive restoration in 2005, which revitalized both its interior and exterior, ensuring its beauty endures for generations to come.

Architectural Marvels

The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk stretches over 50 meters in length and features a striking three-aisle layout. The main nave, measuring 34 meters, draws attention to the magnificent altar dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. Crafted by František Kadeřábek from Prague, the altar was designed by Professor Jan Kastner. Flanking the main altar are side altars dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Saint Joseph, also crafted by the same artists.

The interior is a visual feast, adorned with stucco decorations by Vojtěch Šíp, a pupil of the renowned sculptor Josef Václav Myslbek. Stained glass windows depicting various saints, including large windows at the transept ends, add a kaleidoscope of colors to the church's ambiance. A choir loft accessible via a staircase on the right adds to the church’s musical heritage, with a singing hall located on the left side beneath the loft, celebrating the church's outstanding choir tradition.

The Resonance of Bells

The western facade of the church is dominated by two towering spires, each reaching 63 meters into the sky. Originally, these towers housed four bells: Jan Nepomucký, Alfons, Gerard, and Klement. The bells, crafted by the Děpold company from Prague, were tuned to match the Benedictine bells in Jerusalem. Sadly, during World War I, two of the bells were requisitioned for military purposes, and during World War II, all were lost. Today, a single bell named Maria Anna, weighing 600 kg, adorns the tower, a gift from Dr. Anna Fremundová of Plzeň.

The Plzeň Nativity

One of the church's hidden gems is the Plzeň Nativity, located in the oratory beneath the Chapel of the Brotherhood. Created between 1947 and 1950 by academic sculptor František Bartoš, the nativity scene is based on a design by architect Jan V. Čermák. It portrays a unique vision of Plzeň bowing to the newborn Savior, featuring figures from local history, including Saint Bartholomew and notable figures from Plzeň’s past.

A Living Heritage

In 2007, the Church of Saint John of Nepomuk became the parish church of the newly established Plzeň-Bory parish. It continues to serve as a vibrant center for worship and community gatherings.
