Memorial Bridge

Memorial Bridge Portsmouth

Memorial Bridge

The Memorial Bridge, a marvel of engineering and a poignant tribute to history, gracefully spans the Piscataqua River, connecting Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine. This vertical-lift bridge, carrying U.S. Route 1, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the region and its dedication to honoring those who served in World War I.

A Bridge with a Legacy

The original Memorial Bridge was constructed between 1920 and 1923, making it the first toll-free bridge to link Portsmouth and Kittery. This ambitious project was a joint venture between Maine, New Hampshire, and the federal government, dedicated as a memorial to the brave sailors and soldiers of New Hampshire who gave their lives during World War I. The bridge was inaugurated on August 17, 1923, with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting by five-year-old Helen Dondero, who would later become Eileen Foley, the mayor of Portsmouth.

For nearly a century, the original bridge served as a vital conduit for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. However, by the early 21st century, the bridge had deteriorated significantly, necessitating weight restrictions and emergency repairs. In 2009, a rehabilitation project was proposed but ultimately shelved due to budget constraints. The bridge's condition continued to worsen, leading to its closure in July 2011 and eventual demolition in early 2012.

The Rise of the New Memorial Bridge

Recognizing the critical need for a replacement, New Hampshire and Maine, with federal support, embarked on constructing a new Memorial Bridge. Designed by Theodore Zoli of HNTB and built by Archer Western Contractors, the new bridge was designed to echo the aesthetic of its predecessor while incorporating modern engineering advancements. The new structure was built atop the original bridge's piers, maintaining a tangible link to its storied past.

The new Memorial Bridge was officially dedicated on August 8, 2013, exactly 90 years after the original bridge's opening. Eileen Foley, who had cut the ribbon as a child, returned to participate in the dedication ceremony, symbolically bridging the past and the present. Initially opened to pedestrians and bicyclists, the bridge soon welcomed vehicular traffic, once again serving as a vital link between Portsmouth and Kittery.

A Modern Marvel

The current Memorial Bridge is a vertical-lift bridge, a design that allows the central span to be raised to accommodate large commercial vessels navigating the Piscataqua River. During the summer months, the lift span remains partially elevated every half-hour between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., facilitating the passage of smaller boats. This feature not only underscores the bridge's engineering prowess but also highlights its role in supporting the region's maritime activities.

One of the standout features of the new Memorial Bridge is its dedication to pedestrian and cyclist access. As the only one of the three bridges spanning the Piscataqua River with provisions for foot and bicycle traffic, it has become an integral part of the proposed East Coast Greenway. Both New Hampshire and Maine have designated the bridge as part of their State Bicycle Routes, encouraging eco-friendly travel and offering stunning views of the river and its surroundings.

A Symbol of Unity and Resilience

The Memorial Bridge is more than just a functional structure; it is a symbol of unity, resilience, and remembrance. The large overhead plaque, carried over from the original bridge, reads, Memorial to the Sailors and Soldiers of New Hampshire who gave their lives in the World War 1917–1919. This inscription serves as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served and the enduring gratitude of the community.

In February 2022, the bridge was illuminated in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, a gesture of solidarity with the people of Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion. This act of support underscores the bridge's role as a beacon of hope and unity, extending beyond its immediate geographical boundaries.

Visiting the Memorial Bridge

For visitors to Portsmouth and Kittery, the Memorial Bridge offers more than just a means of crossing the river. It provides a unique vantage point to appreciate the beauty of the Piscataqua River and the bustling activity of the harbor. Walking or cycling across the bridge, visitors can enjoy panoramic views, feel the gentle breeze, and reflect on the rich history that the bridge embodies.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, an engineering aficionado, or simply someone seeking a scenic stroll, the Memorial Bridge is a must-visit landmark. It stands as a tribute to the past, a marvel of modern engineering, and a symbol of the enduring spirit of the communities it connects.
