Square Maurice-Schwob

Square Maurice-Schwob Rezé

Square Maurice-Schwob

Nestled in the heart of Rezé, France, the Square Maurice-Schwob is a charming green oasis that offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. With its rich history, lush landscapes, and unique architectural elements, this square is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists seeking a tranquil retreat.

The History of Square Maurice-Schwob

The origins of Square Maurice-Schwob date back to 1853 when the city of Nantes acquired the land following the division of the Lusançay estate. Initially occupied by workers' gardens, the area was transformed into a public square, thanks to the ambitious vision of city architect Étienne Coutan. His plan was to create a garden-promenade that would extend beyond the current square, offering stunning views of the Loire River and the industrial landscape.

Although the original project was scaled down, the square was officially inaugurated on September 27, 1933. Over the years, it has undergone various changes, including a significant renovation in 2012 by the city's green spaces and environment service. In March 2020, a monumental steel staircase designed by François Delarozière was added, connecting the belvedere directly to the garden set in the former Miséry quarry below.

Exploring Square Maurice-Schwob

As you wander through Square Maurice-Schwob, you'll be greeted by a harmonious blend of nature and art. The square's layout features two regular sides forming a right angle to the northwest, while the southeast is defined by the winding path along the cliff's edge overlooking the former quarry. With an area of 3,000 square meters, this green space offers ample room for leisurely strolls and quiet contemplation.

One of the standout features of the square is the sculpture L'Épave by Paul Auban, created in 1926. This poignant piece, made of tuffeau stone, depicts a grieving Breton mother mourning her son, who was lost at sea. The sculpture draws inspiration from the Breton culture, which is deeply rooted in the Chantenay area. It also served as a model for another of Auban's works, La Picarde maudissant la guerre, a war memorial in Péronne.

Architectural Elements and Scenic Views

Étienne Coutan's architectural vision is evident throughout the square, with recurring design elements such as the Le Centaure bench and the bahut wall made from local schist. These features not only enhance the square's aesthetic appeal but also provide comfortable spots to pause and soak in the surroundings.

For those who appreciate breathtaking vistas, the square offers several vantage points with views of the Loire River and the industrial landscape beyond. The juxtaposition of natural beauty and industrial scenery creates a unique atmosphere that is both serene and thought-provoking.

Artistic Installations and Cultural Events

Square Maurice-Schwob is not just a place of natural beauty; it is also a hub for artistic expression. As part of the 2012 edition of Le Voyage à Nantes, the square became home to the Lunar Tree, a striking 12-meter-tall sculpture of a dead, white tree created by artists Mrzyk & Moriceau. This installation adds a whimsical touch to the square, inviting visitors to ponder the interplay between nature and art.

Throughout the year, the square hosts various cultural events and activities, making it a lively gathering place for the community. From art exhibitions to outdoor concerts, there's always something happening in this vibrant space.
