Råbygården

Råbygården Södertälje

Råbygården

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Södertälje, Sweden, Råbygården offers a captivating glimpse into rural Swedish life from the 18th century. This historic farmstead, part of the Torekällberget open-air museum, is a treasure trove of cultural heritage. Visitors are transported back in time to experience the charm and simplicity of a bygone era, where each building tells a story of the past.

The History of Råbygården

Råbygården's origins trace back to the late 18th century in the village of Råby, Grödinge parish. The main building, a traditional log parstuga, was constructed between 1776 and 1777 by farmer Erik Johansson. As the 19th century unfolded, the house was expanded with an upper floor, though it was rarely used due to the high cost of heating. Originally, the roof was likely covered in turf, but today it features a gently sloping tile roof.

The farmstead was owned by the Johansson family for 144 years until 1921, when the last owner, Carl Julius Johansson, sought a more modern residence. Recognizing the historical value of the building, the Östra Sörmlands Cultural Historical Association acquired it. In the winter of 1929, the main building was carefully dismantled and relocated to Torekällberget, where it became one of the museum's first historical structures.

Exploring Råbygården

As you wander through Råbygården, you’ll find yourself immersed in the authentic atmosphere of a 19th-century Swedish farm. The ground floor of the main building features the “dagligstuga,” a combined living room and kitchen where the family spent much of their time. During the cold winter months, it also served as the sleeping quarters. On the opposite side lies the “anderstugan,” or “the other room,” typically reserved for storage or special occasions.

Upstairs, two large rooms await exploration. One is set up as a weaving chamber, showcasing the traditional craft that was an essential part of rural life. The other room serves as a festive space, evoking memories of celebrations and gatherings that once filled the home with joy and laughter.

The Svalgångsboden and Stolpboden

Adjacent to the main building, the Svalgångsboden stands as a testament to traditional Swedish architecture. This two-story loft building, with its distinctive overhanging gallery, was used for storage and as a summer sleeping area for farmhands. Textiles were stored on the upper floor, while preserved foods and grains were kept below. This structure was relocated from the village of Näs near Nykvarn in 1930.

Nearby, the Stolpboden is a rare example of its kind in Södermanland. Elevated on large corner stones, this small log storehouse was designed to deter rodents from accessing the stored provisions. Typically, flour, grains, and preserved foods were kept here. It was moved from Tingstaden in Turinge parish in 1931.

The Redskapsboden

To the left of the main building, the Redskapsboden marks the southwestern boundary of the farmyard. As its name suggests, this building was used to store various tools and equipment. The log structure, painted in the traditional Swedish red, features an outhouse at one end. An inscription dating back to 1739 can be found on one of the oldest logs, adding to the building's historical allure. It was relocated from Över-Eneby in Överjärna parish in 1931.

A Window into the Past

Råbygården is more than just a collection of old buildings; it is a living museum that offers a window into the daily lives of Swedish farmers in the 1800s. The farmstead’s careful restoration and preservation provide an authentic setting for visitors to explore and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking to experience the tranquility of rural Sweden, Råbygården is a must-visit destination. The farm’s idyllic surroundings and historic charm promise an unforgettable journey through time, where the past comes alive with every step you take.
