The origins of Resurrection Church Spremberg date back to the 14th century when it was initially constructed as a Romanesque village church in Pritzen. Over the centuries, it underwent several modifications, including a Renaissance-style renovation of the altar in 1585 and the addition of a tower in 1681 (or possibly 1770, according to some records). The church's structure was further expanded in 1714 with a two-story extension featuring a hipped roof.
Despite its historical significance, the church faced the threat of demolition in the late 20th century due to the advancing Greifenhain brown coal mine. In 1988, the church was carefully dismantled and its components numbered and stored, awaiting a new home. This meticulous process involved preserving seven doors, seven windows, 25,000 roof tiles, 14,000 rafters, and 6,000 floor slabs, among other elements.
After much deliberation, a suitable site was found in Spremberg, near the Waldfriedhof cemetery. The relocation project began in December 1991 with the pouring of new foundations. The cornerstone was laid on August 3, 1992, and the church was officially reopened as Resurrection Church Spremberg on April 4, 1994, Easter Monday.
The reconstructed church maintains its traditional southwest-northeast orientation and features a longitudinal rectangular nave with three round-arched windows on the north side and two on the east side. The flat-roofed choir and the fully plastered tower with an octagonal base on the south side add to its distinctive appearance. The main entrance, a round-arched door located at the base of the tower, invites visitors into the sacred space.
The church's architectural beauty is highlighted by its natural stone cladding on the lower part of the nave, which still bears the markings from its relocation. The tower is supported by angled buttresses, which were adorned with flat tiles during a renovation in 2012. The northwest two-story annex, with its rough plaster finish, houses the sacristy on the ground floor and the patron's gallery on the upper floor. This gallery features a unique mechanism that allows the windows to be lowered into the wooden paneling below.
The entrance to the annex is framed by a sandstone surround, with the initials C. H. K. O. and A. C. K. G. M. and the original construction date of 1714 inscribed on the curved portals above. Beneath these portals lies the alliance coat of arms of the von Knoch family, who held the lordship of Pritzen since 1661.
Inside Resurrection Church Spremberg, visitors can admire the restored altar, which now serves as the central shrine on the altar block. The interior also features an octagonal wooden baptismal font with ornamental carvings from 1675, a sandstone hanging epitaph dedicated to Christian Ernst von Knoch (1686–1756), and two gravestones. One of these gravestones, located beneath the epitaph, commemorates Gottlob Ernst Ferdinand von Knoch with an obelisk and a mourning putto.
