The Origins of Landestheater Tübingen

The story of the LTT is deeply intertwined with the post-war history of Germany. It all began in 1945, when a group of passionate actors formed the “Städtische Schauspielhaus Tübingen” in the Schillersaal of the local museum. This multifunctional space, which also served as a cinema, was the humble beginning of what would become a significant cultural institution. In 1947, the cities of Tübingen and Reutlingen joined forces, creating a theater association that laid the groundwork for the LTT. By 1950, with the support of the then Bundesland Württemberg-Hohenzollern, the theater began a systematic schedule of performances and regional tours.

Finding a Permanent Home

For years, the LTT operated out of the museum, but this was far from ideal. The lack of proper facilities for workshops, rehearsals, and administration posed significant challenges. Despite various plans and proposals, financial constraints meant that a new theater building remained out of reach. However, in 1975, a solution was found. The vacant Stuhlfabrik Schäfer was identified as a potential site, and after four years of planning and construction, the LTT finally had a permanent home. The theater officially opened its doors in 1978 with the German premiere of Franz Xaver Kroetz’s “Mensch Meier,” followed by the inauguration of the Great Hall in 1979 with Friedrich Schiller’s “Die Räuber.”

A Hub for Young Audiences

The LTT is not just a theater for adults; it has a thriving children and youth division known as the Junge LTT. Established in 1984, this branch of the theater focuses on contemporary productions for younger audiences, promoting innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and active participation. The Junge LTT tours extensively, bringing the magic of theater to schools and kindergartens across Baden-Württemberg and beyond, allowing young people to engage with the arts in a meaningful way.

Theater Education and Community Engagement

With an ensemble of 24 actors and approximately 100 other staff members, the LTT produces around 20 original productions each year across its three stages, which can accommodate between 50 and 385 spectators. Additionally, the theater hosts over 900 performances annually, with a significant portion taking place outside of Tübingen, reaching audiences in neighboring states and even countries like Switzerland and Austria. The LTT also takes part in the triennial open-air summer theater, a collaborative effort with the Zimmertheater Tübingen and Theater Lindenhof.
