This sacred image originally adorned a small roadside shrine attached to an ancient palace wall. As the devotion to the fresco grew, a chapel was constructed in 1652 to house it. By 1679, the chapel had evolved into an oratory and was sold to the parish priest of the nearby San Cristoforo Parish. Its transition to private ownership spared it from the widespread demolitions that befell many other churches in Vigevano during the Napoleonic suppressions.

Transformation and Expansion

By the mid-18th century, the chapel had become too small to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. In 1749, plans were set in motion to expand and enrich the structure, resulting in the baroque-style church that we see today. The construction work continued until 1763, giving the church its distinctive architectural features.

In 1806, the San Cristoforo Parish was relocated to San Pietro Martire, but the Santissimo Crocifisso Church remained open to the public. Additional structures were built in 1818, which housed a hermit until the mid-20th century. Following the demolition of the San Cristoforo Church during the Napoleonic era, its baroque altar and one of its three bells were transferred to the Santissimo Crocifisso Church. The bell, dedicated to the Holy Trinity and dating back to 1690, is still functional and is the middle bell in the church's small bell tower.

The Santissimo Crocifisso Church is a masterpiece of baroque architecture, with its striking façade marked by two colossal pilasters topped by a triangular pediment. The building's height is accentuated by the absence of windows on its walls, necessitating the inclusion of a large lantern to illuminate the interior. The octagonal roof, supported by short pillars resting against the perimeter walls, leaves the dome visible and free-standing, adding to the church's architectural grandeur.

Inside, the church's black twin columns and inscription panels recounting the Passion of Christ create a somber yet reverent atmosphere.
