Nestled in the heart of Aurich, Niedersachsen, the Piqueurhof stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of history and architectural elegance. This neoclassical gem, now known as Hotel am Schloss, invites visitors to step back in time while enjoying modern comforts. Its storied past and charming facade make it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring the region.
The history of Piqueurhof is a fascinating journey through time. Originally, the site was a power base for the Counts of Oldenburg in the 12th century. By 1380, the influential tom Brok family transformed it into a formidable brick tower house, typical of Frisian stone houses. However, the tides of power shifted when Focko Ukena, a victorious leader, took over after the Battle of the Wild Fields. His family resided here until the Cirksena family, another prominent lineage, demolished the castle around 1430 in their struggle for dominance in East Frisia.
Though the original fortress has vanished, the land remained significant. In 1682, Princess Christine Charlotte established a butter and cheese production facility on the site, entrusting its operation to a Dutchman. By the early 18th century, Prince George Albrecht had two large barns constructed in the Gulfhaus style, along with a riding house and stables known as the Pikierhof, named after the pikemen or possibly the mounted hunters, piqueurs, stationed there.
With the annexation of East Frisia by Prussia, the site underwent another transformation. Sold to Jannes Meyer in the 19th century, the property was converted into a two-story inn, marking the beginning of its journey as a hospitality venue. However, a devastating fire in 1884 razed the building, paving the way for a new structure designed by Johann Wempe in the neoclassical style.
This architectural masterpiece evolved into the Hotel Piqueurhof, expanding over six plots with two grand halls, 40 rooms, a swimming pool, and a bowling alley. Its blend of historical charm and modern amenities made it a beloved destination for visitors and locals alike.
