The History of San Giacomo

Originally dedicated to the Holy Sepulchre, the church served as an oratory for the clergy of Sassari.

In the mid-16th century, the church underwent significant changes. The Canonici, who had lived a communal life, left the church, which was then handed over to the Arciconfraternita dell'Orazione e Morte. This brotherhood, known for its charitable works and noble membership, reconstructed the church between 1600 and 1603, dedicating it to their patron, Saint James (San Giacomo). Despite a setback when the newly built structure collapsed, the city rallied to support its reconstruction with a generous donation of 200 ducats.
