The History of Bündner Kunstmuseum

The Villa underwent significant renovations from 1987 to 1989 under the guidance of architects Peter Zumthor, Peter Calonder, and Hans-Jörg Ruch, ensuring it met the needs of a modern art museum. A further expansion took place between 2014 and 2016, with the addition of a contemporary wing designed by the Barcelona-based architectural firm Barozzi/Veiga.

Exploring the Collection

The Bündner Kunstmuseum is renowned for its extensive collection that spans from the 18th century to the present day, with a particular focus on local artists. Among the highlights are works by Angelika Kauffmann, a Chur-born artist who made a significant impact in the 18th century. The museum also boasts an impressive array of pieces by the Giacometti family, including Giovanni, and his sons Alberto and Diego, as well as their relative Augusto.

Expressionism is well represented in the museum's collection, with notable works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Hermann Scherer, Albert Müller, and Paul Camenisch. The museum also features important pieces from the latter half of the 20th century by artists such as Alois Carigiet, Matias Spescha, HR Giger, Not Vital, and Zilla Leutenegger.

The Architectural Splendor of Villa Planta

The Villa Planta, named after its original owner Jacques Ambrosius von Planta, was constructed between 1874 and 1875 by architect Johannes Ludwig as a private residence. In 1898, von Planta sold the villa to the Rhätische Bahn, which leased it to the Canton of Graubünden for cultural purposes starting in 1919. The canton eventually purchased the property in 1957.

The neoclassical Villa Planta is a sight to behold, with its grand façade featuring a portico supported by columns. The villa's design reflects von Planta's time as a merchant in Alexandria, Egypt, with elements such as the Sphinx statues on the staircase, Pompeian-style paintings in the former salon, and a golden dome painted in Byzantine style, crowned with a crescent moon. The villa's restoration in the late 1980s and again in the mid-2010s has preserved its historical charm while adapting it to the needs of a contemporary museum.

The Modern Extension

In 2011, an international architectural competition was held to design an extension for the Bündner Kunstmuseum. The winning design by Estudio Barozzi/Veiga replaced the former natural history museum and was praised for its precise and clear integration into the existing architectural landscape. The modern extension provides additional exhibition space and enhances the museum's ability to host a diverse range of exhibitions and events.
